Geopolymer was the name given by Daidovits in 1978 to materials that are characterized by inorganic chains or networks or molecules. Geopolymer cement concrete is made from the use of waste materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). The fly ash is the waste product generated from the thermal energy plant and the ground granulate the blast furnace slag is generated as waste material in the steel plant. Both fly ash and GGBS are processed by appropriate technology and are used for concrete work in the form of geopolymer concrete. The use of this concrete helps reduce waste and also reduces carbon emissions by reducing the demand for Portland cement.
The main constituent of the geopolymers is the source of silicon and aluminum which are provided by thermally activated natural materials (eg kaolinite) or industrial by-products (eg fly ash or sheets) and an alkaline activation solution which polymerizes these materials into Chains and molecular networks to create hardened binder. Also called alkali activated cement or inorganic polymer cement.
Composition of Concrete Geopolymer:
The following materials are needed to produce this concrete:
• Fly ash - A by-product of a thermal power plant
• GGBS - A Byproduct of Steel Plant
• Thick aggregates and coarse aggregates as required for normal concrete.
• Alkaline activator solution for GPCC as explained above. The catalytic liquid system is used as the alkaline solution of the activator. It is a combination of solutions of alkali silicates and hydroxides, in addition to distilled water. The role of the alkaline activator solution is to activate the Si and Al containing geopolymer source materials such as fly ash and GGBS.
