disadvantages filler slab

My house construction is started and I'm eager to know about the Filler slab concrete Pro's & Con's.

I need help on this.

The filler slab is a variation of the conventional reinforced cement concrete slab in which part of the concrete is replaced by a filler material which can be a waste material to ensure an economic advantage over a RCC slab. The basic principle in a filler slab is that, considering an RCC slab of a given thickness, the concrete in the lower half of the slab is simply deadweight and does not play a role in the absorption of the compression load, which is Normally absorbed by Concrete in a slab of RCC. In this way, this concrete can be replaced by a suitable lightweight filler material that can be housed in the lower half of the slab. Since it reduces the weight of the slab by replacing the concrete, savings in the amount of steel reinforcement can also be achieved without compromising the quality and strength of the slab. Commonly used fillers are burnt clay tiles (such as Mangalore tiles), bricks, coconut shells, terracotta pots etc. The filler slab was popularized by architect Laurie Baker in India in the late 70's and subsequently promoted by HUDCO through its National Network of Construction Centers.


The filler plate is based on the principle that for simply supporting roofs, the upper part of the slab is subjected to compressive forces and the lower part of the slab undergoes tensile forces. The concrete is very good to withstand the compressive forces and the steel supports the load due to tensile forces. Therefore, the lower traction region of the slab does not require any concrete except to hold steel reinforcements together. Therefore, in a conventional RCC slab a lot of concrete is lost and needs additional reinforcement because of the additional load of the concrete that could otherwise be replaced by low cost and lightweight fillers, which will reduce deadweight as well as The cost of the slab to 25% (as used 40% less steel and 30% less concrete). The filler plates also result in less load being transferred to the bearing walls and foundations. The air gap between the tiles makes it a good thermal insulation and the ceiling looks attractive too.
