Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the use of digital processing, such as by computer, to meet a wide variety of signal processing operations. The signal processed in this manner is a sequence of numbers that represents continuous variable samples such as time, location, or frequency in a domain. Digital Signal Processing and Analog Signal Processing are Subfields of Signal Processing. DSP applications include audio and speech processing, sonar, radar and other sensor array processing, spectral density estimates, statistical signal processing, digital image processing, signal processing for telecommunications, control systems, biomedical engineering, earthquake science.

DSP could include linear or non-linear operations. Non-liner signal processing is closely related to nonlinear system identification and it can be applied in time, frequency and spacio-temporary domains. Many applications of analog processing have many advantages in the application of digital computation for signal processing, such as error detection and improved transmission, as well as data compression. DSP is applicable for both streaming data and static (stored) data.
