ABSTRACT

As we, all know that bore wells are used to extract water from the earth. The earth is dug using a tool called BUTTON BITS. Button bit is a tool that blasts the rocks and breaks into pieces, which are on its way during the drilling operation and make the operation easy.
The material used for manufacturing the bits is EN 36 C. Especially this type of material is used because it posses all the required qualities of the operation such as it gives a very hard surface and can be case hardened with a strong core and retaining high degree of toughness in order to resist wear and tear while hitting the hard rock and penetration into the soil.
The life of the bit is about 2000 feet and depending up of the type of soil the life of bit may vary. Depending upon the requirement different types of bits are used. Some of them are drifter bits, which are used for mining and blasting purposes, panther bits, and digger bits are used for water well drilling.
The hammers are the source of providing the blows on the bits for the blasting of rocks.
The Down-The-Hole Hammer is a pneumatically operated bottom-hole drill that efficiently combines the hitting action; the pneumatic drill can be used on any standard rotary rig with an integral or auxiliary air compressor of sufficient capacity. It is applied for fast and economical drilling of medium to extremely hard formations. Fast penetration results from the air piston blows transmitted directly to the bit, so practically no energy is wasted in chewing up cuttings. Short, rapid blows that minimize the effect of dipping and broken formations assure a straight hole
