Strowger switch

The Strowger switch was the first commercially successful electromechanical shift exchange telephone exchange system. It was invented by Almon Brown Strowger and patented for the first time in 1891. Due to its operational characteristics, it is also known as a Step-by-Step Switch (SXS).

Strowger, a funeral home, was motivated to invent an automatic telephone exchange after having difficulty with local telephone operators, one of whom was the wife of a competitor. He was told that he was convinced that she, as one of the hand-held telephone operators, was sending "calls to the funeral home" to her husband.

He first conceived his invention in 1888, and patented the automatic telephone exchange in 1891. It is reported that the initial model was made of a round necklace box and some straight pins.

While Almon Strowger might have devised the concept, he was not alone in his efforts and sought the help of his brother Arnold, nephew William and others with a knowledge of electricity and money to realize their concepts. The Strowger Automatic Telephone Exchange Company was founded in 1891.

The company installed and opened the first commercial exchange in its hometown of La Porte, Indiana, on November 3, 1892, with about 75 subscribers and capacity for 99. It used two key type telegraphs on the phone, which had to be exploited The correct number of times to pass the switch, but the use of separate keys with separate drivers to the exchange was not practical for a commercial system. Early advertising called the new invention the phone "no girl, no shit, no order, no wait".

The Strowger Automatic Telephone Exchange Company became the Electric Power Company, which Strowger was involved in the foundation, although Strowger himself does not appear to have been involved in new developments. Strowger patents were licensed exclusively to the automatic power company. Strowger sold his patents in 1896 for $ 1,800 and sold his stake in Automatic Electric in 1898 for $ 10,000. Their patents were subsequently sold for $ 2.5 million in 1916. The company's engineers continued the development of Strowger designs and filed several patents on the names of their employees.

Crossbar switch

In electronics, a crossover switch (crossover switch, matrix switch) is a collection of switches arranged in a matrix configuration. A crossbar switch has multiple input and output lines which form a cross-pattern of interconnection lines between which a connection can be established by closing a switch located at each intersection, the elements of the array. Originally, a crossbar switch consisted literally of crossbars that provided inlet and outlet paths. Later applications achieved the same switching topology in solid-state semiconductor chips. The crossover switch is one of the main switching architectures, along with a rotary switch, memory switch and a crossover switch.

A crossbar switch is a set of individual switches between a set of inputs and a set of outputs. The switches are arranged in a matrix. If the transverse switch has M inputs and N outputs, then a transverse bar has a matrix with M × N crossing points or places where the connections cross. At each crossing point there is a switch; When closed, connect one of the inputs to one of the outputs. A given crossbar is a single layer, a non-blocking switch. Non-blocking means that other simultaneous connections do not prevent the connection of other inputs to other outputs. Beam collections can be used to deploy multiple layers and lock switches. A crossbar switching system is also referred to as a coordinate switching system.
