Abstract
Here, students learn how personally controlled health records can make it possible for a person to capture, access, and manage his or her own health information in a convenient and secure way. They learn how these records can improve quality of care by improving communication between multiple healthcare providers, and reduce costs by avoiding unnecessary duplication of medical tests. In the laboratory, students use C# to program personally controlled health records. Along the way, they learn programming skills, about how encryption can be used to secure data, and about the design of user-friendly user interfaces.
