Backup and recovery procedures protect your database against data loss and rebuild data in case of loss. Reconstructing data is achieved through media recovery, which refers to the various operations involved in restoring, roll forward and reverse a backup of the database files. A backup is a copy of data from your database that can be used to rebuild that data. Backups can be divided into physical backups and logical backups.
Physical backups are backed-up physical files used to store and recover your database, such as data files, control files, and archived redo logs. Ultimately, each physical backup is a copy of the files that store information from the database in some other location, either on disk or in some offline storage, such as tape. Logical backups contain logical data (for example, tables or stored procedures) that are exported from a database with an Oracle export utility and stored in a binary file for later re-import into a database using the Oracle corresponding Oracle import.
