Double fork suspension

A suspension design that is common in high performance cars is the double wishbone. In a double swingarm suspension, each wheel is attached to the vehicle by means of two control arms (also known as A arms). These two control arms are of approximately triangular shape, this form gives rise to the names of suspension "A-arm" and "double fork". The wheel assembly is attached to each control arm in what would be the upper part of A formed by each control arm (although the arms are generally approximately parallel to the ground, so this "top" is not actually in the part higher); Each arm is attached to the vehicle frame at the base of the A. As the wheel goes up and down (for example, by blows or body rolls), each control arm rotates on two bushings or ball joints at its base; There is also a bushing or ball joint at the junction of each arm to the wheel assembly.

A typical double swingarm suspension has control arms that are somewhat different lengths, and often the angles of the two when the car is at rest differs as well. By carefully choosing the relationship between the lengths and angles of the upper and lower control arms, automotive engineers can modify the handling and handling of the car. It is possible, for example, to mount a double fork suspension so that the car maintains approximately the correct curvature (the incline of the wheel in or out) even when the wheel is over a pothole or the car is leaning over Hard duty None Another common type of suspension is so good at keeping the wheels at right angles to the road and therefore this suspension design is common in performance cars like Ferraris and sport sedans like the Acura RLX. The dual-cradle design is also the suspension of choice for open-wheel racecars like those racing in Formula 1 or in Indianapolis; In many such cars the control arms are readily visible as they extend from the body to the wheel assembly.

Unfortunately, the double-wishbone design takes up more space than other suspension types and is difficult to fit into a front-wheel drive vehicle, so it is not appropriate for every car or truck. Even some cars that are designed to handle well at high speeds, like the Porsche 911 and most BMW sedans, employ different designs of the double swingarm, and some performance cars like the Alfa Romeo GTV6 use the double arm in only one Pair of wheels

A matter of terminology to take into account: some other suspension systems, such as the MacPherson strut support have a single control arm; This control arm is sometimes also called a wishbone and therefore suspension may be considered a "wishbone" system, but most people who use the term "wishbone" refer to the double hairpin configuration.
