CUFF ELECTRODE
#1

An approach for developing a new biomedical electrode is presented. This is the cuff electrode. This electrode has an advantage over the conventional electrode in that very low amplitude bio-potential are picked up without noise. Results from animal experiments highlight the potential of the cuff electrode in medical applications. Future development of cuff electrodes will focus on fabrication method, such as the use of thin film electrode addition of electronics on the cuff improvement of signal-to-noise ratio, and cuffs for fascicle selective recordings. Cuffs can also be used for sensing of proprioceptive information. For example, muscle afferent to control bladder simulation. Cuff electrodes may be a valuable component to provide sensory feed back information in full implantable FES (functional electrical stimulation) systems.
