MRF Pace Foundation

The MRF Pace Foundation was established in August '87, with the legendary Dennis Lillee of Australia, as Director, with the singular mission of developing and breeding strike bowlers of tomorrow.

A brain-child of late Mr Ravi Mammen, the birth of this foundation coincided with one of the greatest events in Indian cricket - the hosting of 'MRF World Series' for the first time in the sub-continent. This marked a significant forward step in Indian cricket.

The MRF Pace Foundation is unique in its nature and objective. It selects, nurtures and scientifically develops the cricketing skills of youngsters with promise. When it began ten years ago, the MRF Pace Foundation possessed few facilities other than an unused ground on the Madras Christian College campus. Since then, under the stewardship of Dennis Lillee and the able guidance of the Chief Coach T.A. Sekar, former Indian Pace Bowler, the MRF Pace Foundation has come a long way.

The Pace Battery

The MRF Pace Foundation recognises promise in youngsters and scientifically hones their skills. This is apparent right from the selection process. The training extends over a period of a few years, during which the boys are given vital inputs on correct diet, exercise routines and net practices. These young cricketers graduate to represent State, Zonal and if exemplary, the National side, in a few years.

The training facilities at the MRF Pace Foundation include an Olympic sized swimming pool, and a Gymnasium structured to include specific work-outs tailor-made for pace bowlers. The grounds offer 4 different wickets to simulate actual match situations - slow, moderate, quick and artificial. A special team of personnel, including a sprint coach, sports medicine doctor and an expert dietician, trains the MRF Pace Foundation boys.

The extensive and intensive training programme lays equal emphasis on physical and mental development. The wards imbibe the underlying essence of mental discipline that distinguishes the champions from the others. A typical weekly schedule at MRF Pace Foundation

Off The Field

The MRF Pace Foundation offers the best off-the-field facilities. Every aspect of the boys' well being is taken care of, during their training. Among other things, they are accommodated in a fully furnished bunglow, and have an expert dietician to regulate their meals. In addition to cricket training and coaching, the academic activities of the boys are also completely taken care of. They boys are inducted into the best schools and colleges and are given special coaching to ensure that their academics do not suffer.

The Big League

No training is complete without competitive exposure. As the inducted wards have played competitive cricket prior admission to the MRF Pace Foundation, it is only natural that they play for the first division league in Chennai.

The MRF Pace Foundation enjoys the distinction of sending all its wards to represent higher levels of the game. Shakti Singh, Feroz Gayaz, Ashish Winston Zaidi, Harvinder Singh, Sodhi and Iqbal Sidqui are currently donning their respective State and Zonal caps.

The most satisfying achievements have been the selection of Vivek Razdan, Subrato Banerjee, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and Zaheer Khan for the Indian team.

As part of the training programme, the wards are given the opportunity to visit Australia, for a share of international exposure, under the watchful eyes of Dennis Lillee and Darryl Foster.
