The consumer is the king of any business activity. It is very important for any marketer to know how the consumer perceives different things and how he behaves accordingly. Therefore, consumer research is imperative to the success of any marketing endeavor. Therefore, the present chapter attempts to study consumer behavior and perception. First, perception is defined as the process of reception, selection of the organization, interpretation, verification and reaction to stimuli or sensory data. Consumer behavior is defined as "behavior that the consumer exhibits in the search for purchases, by evaluating and eliminating products and services that are expected to meet their needs." The study of consumer behavior is the study of how individuals make the decision to spend their available resources such as time, money, effort, etc. on consumer-related items. It includes the study of what they buy, when they buy it, why they buy it, where they buy it, how often they buy it, and often use it. As a salesperson, it is important to recognize why and how people make their consumption decision, so that we make a better strategic marketing decision. If the marketer understands consumer behavior they are able to predict how consumers are likely to react to diverse clues of information and environment and are able to shape their marketing strategies accordingly. Undoubtedly, marketers who understand consumer behavior will have great competitive advantage in the market. Consumer behavior is relatively new field of study in the mid-late 1960s, without any body of research itself, discipline borrowed strongly from concepts developed in other scientific disciplines, such as Psychology (study of individuals), Sociology Groups), Social psychology (study of how an individual operates in groups), Anthropology (the influence of society on individuals) and Economies. The initial thrust of consumer behavior was from a managerial prospective, in charge of marketing wanted to know the specific causes of consumer behavior. They also wanted to know how people receive information related to store consumption and use so they could design marketing strategies to influence the consumption decision. They consider the disciplines of consumer behavior as a science applied to marketing. There are several reasons why the study of consumer behavior developed as a separate marketing discipline. The sellers had long observed that the consumer did not act or react as marketing theory would suggest. The size of the consumer market in each country is huge and constantly expanding.
