Transportation forms the backbone of the massive Indian economy. Since the economic liberalization of the 1990s, infrastructure development has progressed rapidly; Today there are a variety of modes of transport by land, water and air. However, India's relatively low per capita GDP means that access to transport has not been uniform. Also the railways provide an extremely important way of getting around in India, transporting 18 million citizens each 24 hour experience.
Public transportation remains the main means of transportation for most livelihoods in India, and Indian public transport systems are among the most widely used in the world. The rail network of India is the fourth longest and most used system in the world, transporting from 8.225 million passengers and more than 970 million tons of freight annually.
The population of motor vehicles in India is low by international standards, with only 24.85 million cars on national roads as of 2013. In total, about 21 percent of households have two wheels, while Only 4.7 percent of households in India have cars / According to the 2011 Census. Despite this, the number of deaths caused by traffic is one of the highest in the world and continues to rise. The automotive industry in India is growing rapidly with an annual output of more than 4.6 million vehicles , with an annual growth rate of 10.5% and vehicle volume is expected to increase significantly in the future.
In 2015-16, the Government of India declared 106 national waterways (NW) under the Indian Waterways Authority to reduce the cost of transport and reduce the carbon footprint by moving traffic from surface roads and railways to waterways .
Despite ongoing improvements in the sector, several aspects of transport are still plagued by problems due to outdated infrastructure and lack of investment in the least economically active parts of the country. Demand for transport infrastructures and services has increased by around 10% annually without the current infrastructure being able to meet these growing demands. According to Goldman Sachs, India will need to spend $ 1.7 trillion on infrastructure projects over the next decade to boost economic growth, which will help India to make progress.
