Electro Bonded Laminates (EBL) are multi-capacitor structures able to switch, on demand and reversibly, their capability of shear stress transfer and, conse-quently, their stiffness components such as the bend-ing stiffness. This transition is achieved by switching between a compliant state and a stiff state which are the result of the combination of electrostatic forces and friction. More in detail EBL are made of two conductive plates separated by two thin layers of dielectric material. When the two conductive plates have the same potential, no attraction force is acting between them: as a result they can slide one on the other ideally without friction. When the plates are subject to a difference of potential, they are attracted by a force proportional to the square of the applied voltage. This phenomenon enables them to transfer shear stress through friction, allowing us to directly control the bending stiffness of the structure and its ability to dissipate energy through friction by mean of the applied potential. The ability of EBL to transfer shear stress is strongly affected by the surface properties of the dielectric and by the geometry of the system itself. In particular we often assume perfect adhesion between the laminates, but experimental observations and misalignments between experiments and analytical results suggest that this is not the case. A more detail investigation on this aspect is therefore essential to fully understand the behaviour of EBL.
