Compensation of Harmonic Currents Utilizing AHC
#1

Today, the situation on low-voltage AC systems has become a serious concern. The quality of electrical power in commercial and industrial installations is undeniably decreasing. In addition to external disturbances, such as outages, sags and spikes due to switching and atmospheric phenomena, there are inherent, internal causes specific to each site and resulting from the combined use of linear and non-linear loads.Untimely tripping of protection devices, harmonic overloads, high levels of voltage and current distortion, temperature rise in conductors and generators all contribute to reducing the quality and the reliability of a low-voltage AC system. The loads which consume non-sinusoidal currents are called as non-linear load. This type of load is used for the conversion, variation and regulation of electrical power in commercial, industrial and residential installations.Acurrate signal conditioning plays an important role in voltage signals.Proper signal conditioning converts the high power signals to meet the requirements of the low voltage control circuits.Increase in non-linearity causes different undesirable features like low power factor and low efficiency. Active harmonic conditioners are proving to be viable option for controlling harmonic distortion levels in many applications. It has been proved to be effective when the load is non-linear.The effective operation of the active harmonic conditioner is based on the accurate sensing of the source current, source voltage and DC side capacitor voltage of the filter.

Abstract
In industrial low and medium voltage mains, passive filters and PFC capacitors have traditionally been used to improve the supply quality. However, they cannot be rated only for the loads being compensated. They are affected by harmonic currents from other non-linear loads or by harmonics from the power system [1]. Compared with passive element compensators, an active harmonic compensator (AHC) can be used to improve the supply quality without worrying about all the problems associated with applying passive elements.

The active harmonic compensation AHC proposed in this article can be used for the industrial networks and can be uses successfully with the non-linear loads. To improve the supply quality of other loads supplied from the same mains, this can be used and is suitable for the consumers with rapid fluctuations of reactive and active power consumption.

advantages of AHC
The design is independent of line impedance and hence the device can be sized to meet the needs of the application
both the harmonic and reactive currents are controlled actively.

The high cost is the main limiting factor behind the AHCs widespread usage. However some advancements are favouring the AHC such as the mass produced hardware in the active filter which cam be used in the device ans can considerably reduce the cost.

Control system:
The control scheme of the system is based on the cascade control architecture. There is a current control in the inner loop without mains sensors voltage. the output voltage of the voltage source inverters is produced by the current sensors for each of the sampling period.
