In-cylinder pressure measurements are the common tool
to analyze and to improve the combustion process of SI
engines. New engine concepts like direct injection SI
engine, dual-plug ignition system and four or five valve
engines require modern measurement techniques which
provide further information about the combustion process.
Optical fibre technique is more suitable to gain
more versatile data than conventional pressure transducers.
Many optical in-cylinder sensor techniques have been
already presented either to monitor flame propagation as
presented in /2,3,4/ or to analyze emission spectrum with
regard on different molecules /9,10,11,12/.
In the present study, an optical sensor is described for
the use in a production engine to find engine control
strategies.
The aim was to develop a sensor which is easy in handling
and which could be fitted in any engine. For that
reason an optical combustion sensor that combine fibre
optics with a conventional spark plug was installed in a
production engine. A modified conventional spark plug
was used for the investigations. Using a conventional
spark plug, the physical properties like heat value were
original.
This kind of measurement had already been published by
Witze /1/ who investigated the influence of charge motion
on the early flame development. This study is focused on
the relationship between overall luminosity measured by
the probes in the spark plug and cylinder pressure, heat
release, IMEP, knock detection and air-fuel ratio for the
purpose of combustion analysis and feedback engine
control.

SUSS MicroOptics is a leading supplier worldwide of microlens arrays for fiber couplers, with the highest ranking in lens array uniformity and the specific knowledge to fit the lens profile precisely to the fiber coupling application.
Case study: SUSS MicroOptics fiber couplers are also used in the Schleifring micro optical rotary joint which allows data transmission between rotating and stationary systems, used for instance for radar antennas or for undersea cable installation ships.
