Existing classes of centrifugal clutch concepts were reviewed. The rigid pseudo-body model (PRBM), rigid body replacement synthesis, force-deflection analysis, compliance potential assessment and flexible concept evaluation were used to develop effective new centrifugal clutch concepts. These methods helped develop and model four new compliant centrifugal clutch designs, model two existing designs and identify a concept with excellent potential for low cost centrifugal clutch applications. This concept, the Floating Opposite Arm Clutch (FOA), doubles the torque capacity metric in relation to existing compatible designs. The torque and coupling speed models for this clutch were developed and tested against four prototypical clutches. New novel designs developed through this work have smaller torque capabilities, but also show good potential due to other unique features. All designs were prototyped and tested to measure their torque-velocity relationships. Thesis (M.S.) - Brigham Young University. Department of Mechanical Engineering, 1999. The clutch is made possible by stationary rest, the transition to motion and the interruption of power flow. The clutch slides to compensate for the difference in the rotational speeds of the drive train engine when the vehicle is being driven. When a change in the operating conditions makes it necessary to change the gears, the clutch disengages the drive train motor during the procedure.

The clutch is intended for the general starting of the car from rest, disconnecting the engine from the transmission to change the gears and avoiding the effect of large dynamic loads on the transmission that appear in transient conditions and on the displacement on different types of roads.

The design of the friction clutch, in addition to taking into account the main requirements (minimum clutch weight, simplicity, construction, high reliability and others), should ensure the following:
• Reliable transfer of torque to the transmission in all service conditions.
• Soft starting of the car from rest and complete coupling of the clutch.
• Correct decoupling, ie complete disconnection of the engine forms the transmission with guaranteed free space between the friction surfaces.
• Minimal moment of inertia of the clutch actuated elements, allowing a smoother gearshift of the gears and reducing wear of the friction surfaces in the synchronizer.
• Required heat rejection forms friction surfaces.
• Protects the transmission against dynamic loads.
• Convenience and ease of control, which is calculated by the effort to be applied to the pedal and the movement of the pedal when decoupling the clutch.
