A mobile phone is a portable telephone that can make and receive calls through a radio frequency link while the user is moving within a telephone service area. The radio frequency link establishes a connection with the switching systems of a mobile telephone operator, which provides access to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Modern mobile phone services use a cellular network architecture and, therefore, mobile phones are often also called cell phones or cell phones. Smartphones have a number of distinctive features. The International Telecommunication Union measures those with an Internet connection, which it calls active mobile broadband subscriptions (which includes tablets, etc.). In the developed world, smartphones have outpaced the use of earlier mobile systems. However, in the developing world, they account for around 50% of mobile telephony.

The feature phone is a term typically used as a retronym to describe mobile phones that are limited in capabilities in contrast to a modern smartphone. Feature phones typically offer voice and text messaging functions, as well as the basic multimedia and Internet functions and other services offered by the user's wireless service provider. A feature phone has additional features above a basic mobile phone that is only capable of voice calls and text messages. Feature phones and basic mobile phones tend to use proprietary, custom designed and user interface software. In contrast, smartphones generally use a mobile operating system that often shares common features between devices.
