Clear view of the need for dual converter is explained here. A dual-phase single-phase converter is described for speed control in both directions. DC motor speed control is very important in applications where precision is required. Dual converters are used for four quadrant DC unit operation. In this paper we present an open-loop control system based on a single-phase dual converter for a DC machine load. The basic structure of the dual converter consists of two converters. In which the left bridge acts as a forward converter and another (right) acts as an inverter. The single-phase full converter allows only two-quadrant operations. If this fully controlled single-phase converter is connected one after another, then a four-quadrant operation is possible and such a dual-converter can be used for single-phase application. The conventional dual converter is built using two full bridge converters one of them is used to allow the motor current to flow only in one direction while the other is used for reverse direction.
