A movie theater (also called a cinema) is a place, usually a building, which contains an auditorium for watching movies (also called movies or movies) for entertainment. Most, but not all, cinemas are commercial operations for the general public, which assist in the purchase of a ticket. Some cinemas, however, are operated by non-profit organizations or societies that charge members a membership fee to watch movies.

The film is projected with a movie projector on a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium, while dialogue, sounds and music are played through a series of wall-mounted speakers. Since the 1970s, subwoofers have been used for low-pitched sounds. In the decade of 2010, most cinemas are equipped for digital cinema projection, eliminating the need to create and transport a physical film print on a heavy reel.

A wide variety of movies are shown in cinemas, ranging from children's animated films, blockbusters to the general public and documentaries for clients who are interested in non-fiction topics. The smaller movie theaters have a single viewing room with a single screen. In the decade of 2010, most cinemas have multiple screens. The largest theater complexes, called multiplexes - a design developed in the United States in the 1960s - have up to 25 screens. Audience members often sit in padded seats which in most theaters are set on a sloping floor, with the highest part at the rear of the theater. Theaters often sell soft drinks, popcorn and sweets and some theaters also sell hot fast food. In some jurisdictions cinemas are licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
