The Chipko or Chipko Andolan Movement was primarily a forest conservation movement in India that began in 1973 and became a meeting point for many future environmental movements around the world. It created a precedent for the start of non-violent protests in India. and its success meant that the world immediately noticed this non-violent movement, which was to inspire many of these ecological groups in time by helping to stop rapid deforestation, expose vested interests, increase ecological awareness and demonstrate the viability of people power. Above all, it provoked the existing civil society in India, which began to address the problems of tribes and marginalized people. Today, beyond the ecosocialist tone, it is increasingly seen as a movement of ecofeminism. Although many of its leaders were men, women were not only its backbone, but also its main support, because they were the most affected by the unbridled deforestation, which caused the lack of firewood and fodder, as well as drinking water and irrigation. Over the years, they also became major players in most of the afforestation work that happened under the Chipko movement. In 1987, the Chipko movement was awarded the Right Livelihood Award. The Chipko Aandolan is a movement that practiced the Gandhian methods of Satyagraha, where both male and female activists played vital roles, including Gaura Devi, Sudesha Devi, Bachni Devi and Chandi Prasad Bhatt.

The year 1964 saw the establishment of Dasholi Gram Swarajya Sangh (DGSS) ("Dasholi Society for the Self-Determination of the People"), created by the Gandhian social worker Chandi Prasad Bhatt in Gopeshwar, and inspired by Jayaprakash Narayan and the Sarvodaya movement, with a They intend to establish small industries using forest resources. His first project was a small workshop of agricultural tools for local use. Its name was later changed to DGSS from the original Dasholi Gram Swarajya Mandal (DGSM) in the 1980s. Here they had to face restrictive forest policies, a hangover from the colonial era that still prevailed, as well as the "contractor system", in which these pieces of forest land were marketed and auctioned off to large contractors, usually from the plains, who brought their own skilled and semi-skilled workers, leaving only the minor jobs like hauling rocks for the hill people, and paying them almost nothing. On the other hand, the mountainous regions saw an influx of more people from the outside, which only added to the ecological balance already exhausted.

The Garhwal Himalayas quickly became the center of a growing ecological awareness of how reckless deforestation had eroded much of the forest cover, leading to the devastating flooding of the Alaknanda River in July 1970, when a large landslide blocked the river and affected an area that begins in Hanumanchatti, near Badrinath, 350 km downstream to Haridwar, more villages, bridges and roads were razed. From then on, the incidence of landslides and the collapse of the land became common in an area that was experiencing a rapid increase in civil engineering projects.
