Cellular Digital Packet Data

Abstract :

Cellular Digital Packet Data is a technique, which is applicable over cellular network for quick transfer of data. It is applicable in providing a quick transfer of data over cellular networks. It transmits the packets over the cellular network in a reliable manner. Packet networks break a stream of data in to independent blocks of data called the packets. CDPD is wirelesses IP network that overlay on the existing AMPS cellular infrastructure. The CDPD raw channel modulation user rate is 19.2 kbps. It provides high speed, high capacity and cost effective data. It performs the important role in its network. It plays important role in credit card verification and ATM networks. With this technology both voice and data can be transmitted over existing cellular channels.

CDPD: Cellular Digital Packet Data
ABSTRACT
Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) is a technique used for transmitting small chunks of data, commonly referred to as packets, over the cellular network in a reliable manner. It allows users to send and receive data from anywhere in the cellular coverage area at any time, quickly and efficiently. CDPD technology provides extensive, high speed (data can be sent over the Airlink at a rate of 19.2 kilobits per second), high capacity, cost effective data services to mobile users. With this technology, both voice and data can be transmitted over existing cellular channels. Wireless "data" communications will soon be just as commonplace as the currently popular office and desk top applications are replaced by a mobile professional with a portable and (various) hand held devices. To facilitate this evolution 1: Advanced mobile data technology is being deployed by cellular service providers, thereby making the service more reliable, useful and cost effective, and 2: Business benefits are being identified and cost justified by early adopters across numerous market segments. By building CDPD as an overlay to the existing cellular infrastructure, and using the same frequencies as cellular voice, carriers are able to minimize the capital expenditures required to offer the service while offering the same coverage area (footprint) their customer base has grown accustomed to. In comparison, it costs approximately $1 million to build out a new cellular cellsite and only about $50,000 to build the CDPD overlay to an existing site. The CDPD overlay network is made up of a combination of key components that operate together to provision the overall service.
INTRODUCTION
In today's fast paced, highly mobile and time poor society, few business people would argue with the notion that communications, in all its forms, is essential to being a productive, competitive, company of the nineties. Increasingly, customers are demanding untethered, wireless applications to conduct business. This has been demonstrated by the overwhelming success of cellular telephones during the past ten years which has, for all intents and purposes, made mobile voice communications commonplace. Wireless "data" communications will soon be just as commonplace as the currently popular office and desk top applications are replaced by a mobile professional with a portable and (various) hand held devices. To facilitate this evolution:
• Advanced mobile data technology is being deployed by cellular service providers, thereby making the service more reliable, useful and cost effective, and
• Business benefits are being identified and cost justified by early adopters across numerous market segments.
The following sections of this paper will focus on exploring the Cellular Digital Packet Data technology which is just one option for achieving mobility with respect to data transmissions
EVOLUTION OF THE TECHNOLOGY & HOW IT WORKS
What is CDPD?
Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) is a technique used for transmitting small chunks of data, commonly referred to as packets, over the cellular network in a reliable manner. It allows users to send and receive data from anywhere in the cellular coverage area at any time, quickly and efficiently. CDPD technology provides extensive, high speed (data can be sent over the Airlink at a rate of 19.2 kilobits per second), high capacity, cost effective data services to mobile users. With this technology, both voice and data can be transmitted over existing cellular channels.
Short for Cellular Digital Packet Data, a data transmission technology developed for use on cellular phone frequencies. CDPD uses unused cellular channels (in the 800- to 900-MHz range) to transmit data in packets. This technology offers data transfer rates of up to 19.2 Kbps, quicker call set up, and better error correction than using modems on an analog cellular channel.
DEFINITION
CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) is a specification for supporting wireless access to the Internet and other public packet-switched networks. Cellular telephone and modem providers that offer CDPD support make it possible for mobile users to get access to the Internet at up to 19.2 Kbps . Because CDPD is an open specification that adheres to the layered structure of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, it has the ability to be extended in the future. CDPD supports both the Internet's Internet Protocol protocol and the ISO Connectionless Network Protocol (CLNP).
CDPD also supports IP multicast (one-to-many) service. With multicast, a company can periodically broadcast company updates to sales and service people on the road or a news subscription service can transmit its issues as they are published. It will also support the next level of IP, IPv6. For the mobile user, CDPD's support for packet-switching means that a persistent page link isn't needed. The same broadcast channel can be shared among a number of users at the same time. The user's modem recognizes the packets intended for its user. As data such as e-mail arrives, it is forwarded immediately to the user without a circuit connection having to be established.
There is a circuit-switched version, called CS CDPD, that can be used where traffic is expected to be heavy enough to warrant a dedicated connection.
Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) was a wide-area mobile data service which used unused bandwidth normally used by AMPS mobile phones between 800 and 900 MHz to transfer data. Speeds up to 19.2 kbit/s were possible. Developed in the early 1990s, CDPD was large on the horizon as a future technology. However, it had difficulty competing against existing slower but less expensive Mobitex and DataTac systems, and never quite gained widespread acceptance before newer, faster standards such as GPRS became dominant.
CDPD had very limited consumer offerings. AT&T Wireless first offered the technology in the United States under the PocketNet brand. It was one of the first consumer offerings of wireless web service. A company named Omnisky provided service for Palm V devices. Cingular Wireless later offered CDPD under the Wireless Internet brand (not to be confused with Wireless Internet Express, their brand for GPRS/EDGE data).
PocketNet was generally considered a failure with competition from 2G services such as Sprint's Wireless Web. After the four phones AT&T Wireless had offered to the public (two from Panasonic, one from Mitsubishi and the Ericsson R289LX), AT&T Wireless eventually refused to activate the devices.
It was particularly popular as a first-generation wireless data solution for telemetry devices (machine to machine communications) and for public safety mobile data terminals.
