The brushless excitation system operates in the absence of manifolds, slip rings and brushes. Instead of these components we are using permanent magnetic exciter and three-phase main exciter with silicon diode rectifier that the system has generated. With this system we can avoid dust particles that cause a great cost of maintenance. The complete structure of this excitation system is clearly explained in this review. The drawback of this system is the presence of a considerable exciter time constant which affects the rate of change of voltage.
The main function of the excitation system is to keep constant the output voltage of the machine regardless of the load. There are mainly two types of A.C excitation system used in large synchronization machine like stastic excitation and brushless excitation.
Brushless Excitement-Now a day most high-capacity generators are used to brush less excitement. In this system there are no brushes and the slip ring are used for excitation purposes, that is why the name is brushless excitement. Here only a pair of brushes are used for generator protection and grounding purpose. As there are no brushes the maintenance cost is lower compared to static excitation.
