As an alternative to conventional shunt capacitor bank installation, a completely new concept of providing reactive power to an electric power system is presented. A new type of capacitor bank installation called "bridge" is described. We present an analytical investigation of the concept of installation of bridge capacitors and its application in an electric power system EHV. The technical and economic advantages of the bridge capacitor bank over the bypass capacitor bank are analyzed in the context of reactive power supplied directly to an EHV system. A field test facility is presented below EHV (138/69 kV) along with some experimental test results.
