A jack is a mechanical device used as a lifting device to lift heavy loads or to apply great forces. A mechanical jack uses a screw thread to lift heavy equipment. A hydraulic jack uses hydraulic power. The most common form is a car cat, floor cat or garage cat, which raises vehicles so that maintenance can be performed. Cats usually have a maximum lifting capacity (eg, 1.5 tonnes or 3 tonnes). Industrial jacks can be sorted for many tons of cargo.
