In the article of Steam Boiler, we discussed about steam boiler and its different types. Here we will be discussing about boiler mounting and accessories of a steam boiler. boiler mountingsBoiler mountings are fittings which are mounted on the boiler for proper functioning and safety of the boiler. Accessories are devices which are integral part of a boiler, but are not mounted on it. Accessories help in controlling and running the boiler efficiently.

Some of the important boiler mountings are Water level indicator, Pressure gauge, Safety valve, Stop valve, Blow off cock, Feed check valve and Fusible plug.

Water level indicators indicates the water level inside the boiler to an observer. Pressure gauge is used to measure the pressure of the steam inside the boiler and are generally used in Bourden type boilers. Safety valves are used to prevent explosions due to excessive internal pressure of steam.

boiler mountingTo control the flow of steam from the boiler to the main steam pipe, stop valve is used. It can also shut off the steam completely when required. Blow off cock are used to empty the boiler when required and to discharge the mud, scale or sediments which are accumulated at the bottom of the boiler. Feed check valve is a non-return valve its function is to regulate the supply of water, which is pumped into the boiler by the feed pump. To put off fire in the furnace when water level falls to an unsafe limit, fusible plug is used.

As discussed, boiler accessories are integral parts of a boiler that help in running the boiler efficiently. Some of the important accessories are Feed pump, Superheater, Economiser and Air preheater.

Feed pump is a double acting reciprocating pump and can be classified as simplex, duplex and triplex pumps according to the number of pump cylinders. Superheater increase the temperature of saturated steam without rising its pressure. Device used to heat feed water by utilising the heat in the exhaust flue gas before leaving through the chimney is called Economiser. Air preheater is used to recover heat from exhausted flue gases and is installed between economiser and chimney. The air required for the purpose of combustion is drawn through the preheater where its temperature is raised.
