Bluetooth Security

Abstract :

Bluetooth is a way of connecting machines to each other without cables or any other physical medium. It uses radio waves to transfer information, so it is very easily affected by attacks. In this let me first give some background information about Bluetooth system and security issues in ad hoc networks, a security framework is introduced for the description of the Bluetooth security layout.
Then both link-level and service-level security schemes are discussed in detail on the basis of the framework and then it concentrates on specific security measures in Bluetooth, mainly authentication, encryption, key management and ad hoc aspects. Corresponding countermeasures are also proposed in order to improve the Bluetooth security.

INTRODUCTION
What actually Bluetooth technology is
11 isn't some strange form of tooth decay as you might initially imagine. Bluetooth is the name of a technology that is now becoming commercially available. 11 promises to change significantly the way use machines.
Bluetooth technology is a wireless short-range communication system introduced to replace the cables connecting portable electronic devices.
Bluetooth is a developing, world wide, open, short-range radio specification focused on communication between the Internet and Net devices, plus it defines communication protocols between devices and computers.
The Name - Bluetooth
Bluetooth was named after a 10th century king, Harald Bluetooth, king of Denmark & Norway.
In 1994 Ericsson work on a wireless technology called Bluetooth. Since then many companies have adopted Bluetooth technology. Making it a small low power, low rate chip to wireless link.
The Bluetooth logo merges the Germanic runes analogous to the modern Latin letter H and B: (for Harald Bluetooth) T (Hagall) and & (Berkanan) merged together, forming a bind rune.
The Basic Idea
Bluetooth is a standard and communication protocol primarily designed for low power consumption.
Communication within short range is possible via Bluetooth(power-class-dependent: 1m, 10m, 100ms).
Bluetooth chip is designed to replace cables. Information normally carried by the cable, is transmitted at a special frequency to a receiver Bluetooth chip.

For making a connection, a Bluetooth follows two procedures: -
1.) Inquiry (or Discovering) Procedure
2.) Paging (or Connecting) Procedure
I nquiry (or Discovering) Procedure
Bluetooth enabled devices use the inquiry procedure to discover nearby devices or to be discovered devices in their locality.
A Bluetooth enabled devices that tries to find other nearby devices is know as inquiry devices and actively send inquiry request.
Bluetooth enabled devices in a piconet.
Piconet: - It is a network in which upto eight Bluetooth enabled devices can be connected.
U i REQUIREMENTS
BLUETOOTH DEVICES:- Bluetooth exists in many products, such as telephones, printers and headsets. The technology transfers data between two or more devices that are near each other in low-bandwidth situations. Bluetooth is commonly used to transfer sound data with telephones or byte data with hand-held computers.
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS:- A EC must have a Bluetooth adapter in order to be able to communicate with other Bluetooth devices (such as mobile phones, mice and keyboards). While some desktop computers and most recent laptops come with a built-in Bluetooth adapter, others will require an external one in the form of a dongle.
MOBILE PHONE REQUIREMENTS:- A mobile phone that is Bluetooth enabled is able to pair with many devices. To ensure the broadest support of feature functionality together with legacy device support.

,,How a Bluetooth transfer data
This networking transmit data via low power radio wave. The Bluetooth system is operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific Medicine) band.
11 communicates on a frequency between 2.402 GHz to 2.480 GHz .
It can connect up to eight devices simultaneously, with all of those devices in the 10 meter (32feets) radius, as each has it's own 48-bit address.
It use a technique called spread spectrum frequency hopping that make it rare for more then one devices to be transmitting at the same time.

I n any wireless networking setup, security is a concern. Devices can easily grab radio waves out of the air, so people who send sensitive information over a wireless connection need to take precautions to make sure those signals aren't intercepted.
With Bluetooth, though the automatic nature of the connection, which is a huge benefit in terms of time and effort, is also a benefit to people looking to send you data without your permission.
It offers several security modes, and device manufacturers determine which mode to include in a Bluetooth-enabled gadget

I n almost all cases, Bluetooth users can establish "trusted devices" that can exchange data without asking permission. When any other device tries to establish a connection to the user's gadget, the user has to decide to allow it.
Service-level security and Device-level security work together to protect Bluetooth devices from unauthorized data transmission. require that users make a conscious decision to open a file or accept a data transfer.

Bluetooth & Wi-Fi both are wireless communication tech.
Both of them using same frequency range & are versions of unlicensed wireless technology, but employ different modulating techniques.
Bluetooth is a replacement of cable in small scale app. where as Wi-Fi in LAN access.
Wi-fi provides higher throughput & covers greater distances, but requires more expensive hardware & higher power consumption.

More prevalent applications of Bluetooth include:
Wireless control of and communication between a mobile phone and a hands-free headsets. This was one of the earliest applications to become popular.
Wireless networking between PCs in a confined space and where little bandwidth is required.
Wireless communications with PC input and output devices, the most common being the mouse, keyboard and printer.
Sending small advertisements from Bluetooth enabled advertising hoardings to other, discoverable, Bluetooth devices.
Two seventh-generation game console, Sony's playstation3 use Bluetooth for their respective wireless controllers.
Dial-up internet access on personal computer or PDA using a data-capable mobile phone as a modem.
For controls where infrared was traditionally used. Replacement of wired serial communications, GPS receivers, medical equipment and traffic control devices.
Bluetooth has a lot to offer with an increasingly difficult market place. Bluetooth helps to bring with it the promise of freedom from the cables and simplicity in networking that has yet to be matched by LAN (Local Area Network).
I n the key marketplace, of wireless and handheld devices, the closest competitor to Bluetooth is infrared. I nfrared holds many key features, although the line of sight it provides doesn't go through walls or through obstacles like that of the Bluetooth technology.
Unlike infrared, Bluetooth isn't a line of sight and it provides ranges of up to 100 meters. Bluetooth is also low power and low processing with an overhead protocol. What this means, is that it's ideal for integration into small battery powered devices.
I nfrared can have data rates of up to 4 MBps, which provides very fast rates for data transfer, while Bluetooth only offers 1 MBps.
For this very reason, infrared has yet to be dispensed with completely and is considered by many to be the complimentary technology to that of Bluetooth. I nfrared has inherent security due to its line of sight.
The greater range and radio frequency (RF) of Bluetooth make it much more open to interception and attack. For this reason, security is a very key aspect to the Bluetooth specification.
Jj ASPECTS USING BLUETOOTH
Athough there are very few d isadvantages, Bluetooth still remains the best for short range wireess technology. Those who have tried t love t, and they know for a fact that Bluetooth will be around for years to come.
HAZARDS:-
First, though there has been a great deal of research, the evidence pointing to any health hazard from radiation in the 800 MHz to 2 GHz range at the power levels used by mobile phones is, at worst, equivocal. This suggests that if there is any risk at all, it is very small. Second, I have not seen any studies suggesting any risk from Bluetooth. This is not surprising. While a phone needs to transmit with enough power to reach a base station antenna that may be a couple of miles away, Bluetooth has a nominal range of 30 feet.

Why is it called Bluetooth?

Harald Bluetooth was king of Denmark in the late 900s. He managed to unite Denmark and part of Norway into a single kingdom then introduced Christianity into Denmark. He left a large monument, the Jelling rune stone, in memory of his parents. He was killed in 986 during a battle with his son, Svend Forkbeard. Choosing this name for the standard indicates how important companies from the Nordic region (nations including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) are to the communications industry, even if it says little about the way the technology works.

Abstract

In this project, the Bluetooth radio system is presented. It is an ad hoc radio system that allows devices from lots of different manufacturers to communicate with one another when they come into range. Bluetooth devices operate at 2.4GHz, in the globally available, license-free, ISM band and they use FH-CDMA technique because of its inherent interference rejection capability. Bluetooth specification also provides a flexible but well defined software stack that enables applications to find other Bluetooth devices in the area, discover what services they can offer, and use that services. Some security issues, as well as power management and QoS issues are also considered. Finally, there is a short overview of some possible Bluetooth applications.

ABSTRACT


The primary purpose of the paper is to take a deeper insight to the current existing technologies like Bluetooth and Short Messaging Service and develop a new standard by amalgamating the two, which thereby removes the basic constraint of the limited range in Bluetooth and makes it wide enough by making a few changes. Thus, expanding current horizons of the new and promising technologies like Bluetooth by all limits and the applications being infinite to gear up for the next technical decade.
Think if you can control your T.V. set in New York by switching a few buttons in the Mumbai local trains…! Sounds unreal duh! But this paper has a Convergence Plan, which promises it to happen.
The paper is primarily divided into 3 parts
• Gives us a brief idea of how Bluetooth works today
• Gives us a brief idea of how SMS technology work today
• The Convergence plan
It basically deals with the current SMS technology which sends a message from one mobile to another mobile and from which at the other end of the mobile on receiving the SMS it decodes the special message as Bluetooth and converts it into a Bluetooth message which can be given to the Bluetooth chip to send as a message to control devices in the vicinity. A slight modification could be done by considering software, which can be installed at both ends of the PC (something analogous to messengers existing today), which can then be used to control the devices near the PC with Bluetooth technology
The plan concentrates on various topics like the basic logic involved, the protocol of how it will work, the reliability feature, the modifications that can be made to suffice the same need and the advantages of the technique used.

Bluetooth
A Bluetooth profile is a wireless interface specification for Bluetooth-based communication between devices. In order to use Bluetooth technology, a device must be compatible with the subset of Bluetooth profiles necessary to use the desired services. A Bluetooth profile resides on top of the Bluetooth Core Specification and (optionally) additional protocols. While the profile may use certain features of the core specification, specific versions of profiles are rarely tied to specific versions of the core specification. For example, there are HFP 1.5 implementations using both Bluetooth 2.0 and Bluetooth 1.2 core specifications.
The way a device uses Bluetooth technology depends on its profile capabilities. The profiles provide standards which manufacturers follow to allow devices to use Bluetooth in the intended manner.
At a maximum, each profile specification contains information on the following topics:
• Dependencies on other formats
• Suggested user interface formats
• Specific parts of the Bluetooth protocol stack used by the protocol. To perform its task, each profile uses particular options and parameters at each layer of the stack. This may include an outline of the required service record, if appropriate.
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
This profile defines how high quality audio (stereo or mono) can be streamed from one device to another over a Bluetooth connection.[1] For example, music can be streamed from a mobile phone to a wireless headset or car audio or from a laptop/desktop to a wireless headset.
A2DP was initially used in conjunction with an intermediate Bluetooth transceiver that connects to a standard audio output jack, encodes the incoming audio to a Bluetooth-friendly format, and sends the signal wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones that decode and play the audio. Bluetooth headphones, especially the more advanced models, often come with a microphone and support for the Headset (HSP), Hands-Free (HFP) and Audio/Video Remote Control (AVRCP) profiles.
A2DP is designed to transfer a uni-directional 2-channel stereo audio stream, like music from an MP3 player, to a headset or car radio.[2] This profile relies on AVDTP and GAVDP. It includes mandatory support for the low-complexity SBC codec (not to be confused with Bluetooth's voice-signal codecs such as CVSDM), and supports optionally: MPEG-1 , MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AAC, and ATRAC, and is extensible to support manufacturer-defined codecs, such as apt-X. Some Bluetooth stacks enforce the SCMS-T digital rights management (DRM) scheme. In these cases, it is impossible to connect certain A2DP headphones for high quality audio.
Operating systems
• Android: Supported in version 1.5.
• BlackBerry: Supports A2DP in Operating System 4.2.
• iPhone and iPod Touch: All iPhones support HFP and PBAP. Version 3.0 of the operating system added support for A2DP, limited AVRCP and PAN for iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch 2nd/3rd generation only. iPod Touch 2g is now compatible with headsets that use the PAN profile. Original iPhone (iPhone 2G) bluetooth chip can provide A2DP as well, but Apple decided not to enable it. However, A2DP can be enabled in a jailbroken iPhone 2G by a special utility.
• Linux: Initial A2DP support was added to BlueZ in version 3.15. The instructions to set up A2DP can be found in the BlueZ Wiki; Since Ubuntu 10.10 setting up a A2DP is as easy as pairing your computer with the bluetooth device and selecting this device as sound in- and/or output in the sound preferences.
• Mac OS X: As of version 10.5, Mac OS X includes native support for A2DP on Bluetooth-equipped Macs. Version 10.4 does not support A2DP, but can be hacked to enable limited functionality.
• Motorola P2K: Motorola L9 running on P2K supports A2DP Profile.
• Nucleus : All Mediatek 6225+ Chipsets supports A2DP Profile.
• Palm OS: A2DP not supported, but can be implemented with third-party applications.
• Palm webOS: A2DP supported by Palm Pre.
• Symbian Series60: Devices running Series60 3rd Edition FP1 (S60v3.1/Symbian 9.1) and newer support A2DP
• UIQ: UIQ 3.0 (Symbian 9.1) and newer support A2DP.
• Windows Mobile (previously Pocket PC): Version 4.0 and newer via Widcomm third party add on. Version 5.0 and newer (with AKU 2.0), thus far based on the Windows CE 5.0 kernel, fully support A2DP if an appropriate device is present.
• Windows XP: Does not natively support A2DP, but newer Bluetooth USB dongles and built-in adapters include drivers with A2DP support.
• Windows Vista: Does not support A2DP natively, but third-parties can provide A2DP profile support without entirely replacing Microsoft's stack. Service Pack 2 adds Bluetooth 2.1 capabilities such as simplified pairing.
• Windows 7: A2DP working on Windows 7 beta releases. Windows 7 Release Candidate and final release no longer includes a Bluetooth audio-class driver. A2DP support is provided entirely by third-party Bluetooth software.
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
This profile is designed to provide a standard interface to control TVs, Hi-fi equipment, etc. to allow a single remote control (or other device) to control all of the A/V equipment to which a user has access. It may be used in concert with A2DP or VDP.
It has the possibility for vendor-dependent extensions.

5. The Bluetooth modules can be either built into electronic devices or used as an adaptor. For instance in a PC they can be built in as a PC card or externally attached via the USB port.
6 . Connections can be point-to-point or multipoint. The maximum range is 10 meters but can be extended to 100 meters by increasing the power. Bluetooth devices are protected from radio interference by changing their frequencies arbitrarily up to a maximum of 1600 times a second, a technique known as frequency hopping
7.The Bluetooth specification targets power consumption of the device from a "hold" mode consuming 30 micro amps to the active transmitting range of 8-30milliamps which is less than 3% of the power used by a standard mobile phone. The chips also have excellent power-saving features.

Bluetooth technology is cheap for companies to implement, which results in lower over-all manufacturing Costs. These savings are then passed on to you, the consumer. The end result: Bluetooth devices are relatively inexpensive.
3. Bluetooth is Automatic.
When two or more Bluetooth devices enter a range (Up to 30 feet) of one another, they automatically begin to communicate without you having to do anything. The best part is: The devices take care of the entire setup process, and you can go about your business.
4. Low Energy Consumption
Bluetooth uses low power signals. As a result, the technology requires little energy and will therefore use less battery or electrical power.
5. Share Voice and Data
The Bluetooth standard allows compatible devices to share both voice and data communications. For example, it is probably no surprise that a Bluetooth enabled cell phone is capable of sharing voice communications with a compatible Bluetooth headset , however, the same cell phone may also be capable of establishing a GPRS connection to the Internet. Then, using Bluetooth, the phone can connect to a laptop. The result: The laptop is capable of surfing the web or sending and receiving email.

Though Bluetooth has a specific range but we can access it up to very wide range and can also use it from an unanticipated range of application from mobiles to automobiles. The low power consumption , small size and low cost enables this technology to be used in the tiniest of devices.

Bluetooth technology is cheap for companies to implement, which results in lower over-all manufacturing Costs. These savings are then passed on to you, the consumer. The end result: Bluetooth devices are relatively inexpensive.
3. Bluetooth is Automatic.
When two or more Bluetooth devices enter a range (Up to 30 feet) of one another, they automatically begin to communicate without you having to do anything. The best part is: The devices take care of the entire setup process, and you can go about your business.
4. Low Energy Consumption
Bluetooth uses low power signals. As a result, the technology requires little energy and will therefore use less battery or electrical power
5. Share Voice and Data
The Bluetooth standard allows compatible devices to share both voice and data communications. For example, it is probably no surprise that a Bluetooth enabled cell phone is capable of sharing voice communications with a compatible Bluetooth headset , however, the same cell phone may also be capable of establishing a GPRS connection to the Internet. Then, using Bluetooth, the phone can connect to a laptop. The result: The laptop is capable of surfing the web or sending and receiving email.
6.ACCESSIBLE FROM ANYWHERE
Though Bluetooth has a specific range but we can access it up to very wide range and can also use it from an unanticipated range of application from mobiles to automobiles. The low power consumption , small size and low cost enables this technology to be used in the tiniest of devices.

Introduction to Bluetooth Technology
Bluetooth is a radio frequency specification for short range, point to point and point to multi point voice and data transfer. Bluetooth technology facilitates the replacement of cables normally used to connect one device to another by a short range radio link. With the help of blue tooth we can operate our keyboard and mouse without direct connection of CPU. Printers, fax machines, headphone, mouse, keyboard or any other digital devices can be part of Bluetooth system.
In spite of facilitating the replacement of cables, Bluetooth technology works as an universal medium to bridge the existing data networks, a peripheral interface for existing devices and provide a mechanism to form short ad hok network of connected devices away from fixed network infrastructures.
Due to their independence on short range radio link, Bluetooth devices do not require a line of site connection in order to communicate. Therefore a computer can print information on a printer if printer is in inside the room. Two blue tooth devices can talk to each other when they come within range of 10 meters to each other.
Bluetooth technology represents an opportunity for the industry to deliver wireless solutions that are ubiquitous across a broad range of devices.
Why it’s name is Bluetooth?
While many new technologies bear technical names, like RS-232 or IEEE
802.11b, Bluetooth, the wireless technology, is different.
Bluetooth was named for the 10th Century Viking king , Harald Blatand
(A.K.A., Bluetooth) who peacefully united all the tiny island kingdoms of
Denmark, southern Sweden, and southern Norway into one country . In
keeping with its namesake, Bluetooth, the new low-cost radio technology, is
designed to unite or connect all different types of devices to effectively work
as one. By uniting devices, Bluetooth eliminates the need for cabling in a
wide range of products, including cellular phones, PCs, headphones, audio
equipment, printers, and many more.
Bluetooth Definitions
• Piconet: Devices connected in an ad hoc fashion, that is, not requiring predefinition and planning, as with a standard network. Two to eight devices can be networked into a piconet. It is a peer network, that is, once connected, each device has equal access to the others. However, one device is defined as master, and the others as slaves.
• Scatternet: Several piconets may form a larger scatternet, with each piconet maintaining independence.
• Master unit: The master in a piconet whose clock and hopping sequence synchronizes the other devices.
• Slave unit: Devices in a piconet that are not the master.
• MAC address: Three bit address that distinguishes each unit in a piconet.
• Parked units: Piconet devices that are synchronized but don't have MAC addresses.
• Sniff and hold mode: Power-saving mode of a piconet device.
How Bluetooth Technology Work
The technology of Bluetooth centers around a 9mm x 9mm microchip, which functions as a low cost and short range radio link. Bluetooth Technology provide a 10 meter personal bubble that support simultaneous transmission of both voice
and data for multiple devices. Up to 8 devices can be connected in a piconet, and uo to 10 piconets can exist within the 10 meter bubble. Each piconet support
up to 3 simultaneous full duplex voice devices.
The gross data rate is 1 Mb/s, but the actual data rate are 432 kbps for full
duplex transmission,721/56kbps for asymmetric transmission, and 384 kbps for
tms2000 transmission.
Bluetooth wireless technology is designed to be as secure as a wire with up to 128-bit public/private key authentication, and streaming cipher up to 64 bit based on a5 security.
Transmission types and rates :
The baseband (single channel per line) protocol combines circuit and packet switching. To assure that packets do not arrive out of order, slots (up to five) can be reserved for synchronous packets. As noted earlier, a different hop signal is used for each packet. Circuit switching can be either asynchronous or synchronous. Up to three synchronous (voice) data channels, or one synchronous and one asynchronous data channel, can be supported on one channel. Each synchronous channel can support a 64 Kb/s transfer rate, which is fully adequate for voice transmissions. An asynchronous channel can transmit as much as 721 Kb/s in one direction and 57.6 Kb/s in the opposite direction. It is also possible for an asynchronous connection to support 432.6 Kb/s in both directions if the page link is symmetric.
