Blindness is a state of lack of visual perception due to physiological or neurological factors. Partial blindness represents lack of integration into the growth of the optic nerve or visual center of the eye, and total blindness is the total absence of visual perception of light. In this work, a simple, cheap and user friendly system is designed and implemented to improve the mobility of blind and visually impaired people in a specific area.

The proposed work includes a portable equipment consisting of head hat and mini hand stick to help the blind person to sail alone safely and avoid any obstacles that can be found, either fixed or mobile, to avoid any possible accident. The main component of this system is the infrared sensor that is used to scan a predetermined area around the blind by emission-reflection waves. The reflected signals received from the barrier objects are used as inputs for the PIC microcontroller. The microcontroller is then used to determine the direction and distance of objects around the blind. It also controls the peripheral components that alert the user to the shape, material and direction of the obstacle. The implemented system is inexpensive, fast and easy to use and an innovative affordable solution for blind and visually impaired people in third world countries.

Artificial vision researchers are inspired by another device, the cochlear implant, which has successfully restored hearing to thousands of deaf people. But the human vision system is much more complicated than hearing. The eye is one of the most amazing organs of the body. Before understanding how artificial vision is created, it is important to know about the important role that the retina plays in the way we see it. Here is a simple explanation of what happens when we look at an object:

• Diffuse light from the object enters through the cornea.
• Light is projected onto the retina.
• The retina sends messages to the brain through the optic nerve.
• The brain interprets what the object is.
