Biofiltration is a relatively new pollution control technology. It is an attractive technique for the elimination of foul-smelling gas emissions and low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The most common style biofilter is just a big box. Some can be as large as a basketball court or as small as a cubic yard. The main function of a biofilter is to put the microorganisms in contact with the contaminants contained in an air stream. The box that forms this biofilter contains a filter material, which is the breeding ground for microorganisms. The microorganisms live in a thin layer of moisture, the "biofilm", which surrounds the particles that make up the filter medium. During the biofiltration process, the polluted air stream is slowly pumped through the biofilter and the contaminants are absorbed into the filter medium. The contaminated gas diffuses into the biofilter and adsorbs onto the biofilm. This gives microorganisms the opportunity to degrade contaminants and produce energy and metabolic by-products in the form of CO2 and H2O.
Types Of Bio Filters
ON THE BASIS OF THE PROVISION
• Bed open: exposed and exposed to all weather conditions.
• Closed Bed: Included with a small exhaust port for clean air ventilation
ABOUT THE BASIS OF THE FORM
Horizontal:
• With larger footprints
• Relatively cheap
• Easy maintenance
Vertical:
• Designed to reduce the footprint required.
• Use less surface compared to Horizontal
• Expensive
• Not easy to maintain
ABOUT SUPPORT MEANS
