Shampoo is a hair care product, usually in the form of a viscous liquid, which is used to clean the hair. Less commonly, the shampoo is available in bar form, like a bar of soap. The shampoo is used by applying it to wet hair, massaging the product in the hair and then rinsing it. Some users can follow a shampooing with the use of hair conditioner.
The purpose of using the shampoo is to remove the unwanted buildup in the hair without loosening both sebum and making unmanageable hair. The shampoo is generally made by combining a surfactant, most often sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, with a cosurfactant, more often cocamidopropyl betaine in water.
Specialized shampoos are available for people with dandruff, hair treated with color, gluten or wheat allergies, interest in using a "all natural", "organic", "botanical" or "plant derived" product, and infants and toddlers ("baby shampoo" is less irritating). There are also shampoos intended for animals that may contain insecticides or other medicines to treat skin diseases or infestations of parasites such as fleas.
