• Users can only view information in the web pages.
• Primary focus : building the web, making it accessible.
Web 2.0
• Second generation
• Users are provided with more user interface, software, storage facilities all through their browser.
Characteristics of web 2.0
• Ability of visitors to makes changes to web pages
• Using web pages users can communicate each other.
• Fast and efficient way to share documents

What is semantic web?
Semantic Web is a group of methods and technologies to allow machines to understand the meaning - or "semantics" - of information on the World Wide Web.
The term was coined by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) director Tim Berners-Lee. He defines the Semantic Web as “a web of data that can be processed directly and indirectly by machines.”

• Semantic web is not about the links between web pages.
• Describes the relationships b/w things
(like A is a part of B)
and the properties of things.

SPARQL
RDF-Resource Description framework
• is a language for describing information and resources on the web.
• The Semantic Web uses RDF to describe web resources.
• Putting information into RDF files, makes it possible for computer programs ("web spiders") to search, discover, pick up, collect, analyze and process information from the web.
OWL-Web Ontology Language
• Ontology is a formal representation of knowledge as a set of concepts with in a domain and the relationship b/w those concepts.
• Language used for knowledge representation.
SPARQL
• is a RDF query language
• it can be used to query any RDF-based data.
• Querying language is necessary to retrieve information for semantic web applications.
