A beam engine/motor is a type of steam engine where a pivoted top beam is used to apply force from a vertical piston to a vertical connecting rod. This configuration, with the engine that directly drives a pump, was used for the first time by Thomas Newcomen around 1705 to remove water from the mines in Cornwall. The efficiency of the engines was improved by engineers, including James Watt, who added a separate condenser, Jonathan Hornblower and Arthur Woolf who composed the cylinders, and William McNaught (Glasgow) who devised a method to combine an existing engine. Beam engines were used for the first time to pump water from mines or into canals, but they could be used to pump water to supplement the flow of a water wheel that drives a mill.

The rotating beam motor is a rear beam motor design where the connecting rod drives a flywheel, by means of a crank (or, historically, by means of a sun and a planetary gear). These beam motors could be used to directly feed the line shaft in a mill. They could also be used to power steam boats.

History

The first beam motors were driven by water and used to pump water from the mines. A preserved example can be seen at Wanlockhead in Scotland. Welding motors were widely used to power pumps in the English channel system when it was expanded by locks at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, and also to drain water from mines in the same period, and as sinuous motors.

The first beam engine related to steam was developed by Thomas Newcomen. This was not, strictly speaking, driven by steam, since the steam introduced under the piston condensed to create a partial vacuum, thus allowing the atmospheric pressure to push down the piston. Therefore, it was called the Atmospheric Motor. The Newcomen atmospheric engine was adopted by many mines in Cornwall and elsewhere, but was relatively inefficient and consumed a large amount of fuel. The engine was improved by John Smeaton, but James Watt solved the main inefficiencies of the Newcomen engine in its Watt steam engine by adding a separate condenser, which allows the cylinder to remain warm. Technically this was still an atmospheric engine until (in later patents) it enclosed the top of the cylinder, introducing steam to also push the piston down. This turned it into a true steam engine and could be said to confirm it as the inventor of the steam engine. He also patented the centrifugal governor and the parallel movement. the latter allowed the replacement of chains around an arc head and, therefore, allowed its use as a rotary engine.

His patents remained in force until the beginning of the 19th century and some say that this delayed development. However, in reality the development had been continuous by others and at the end of the patent period there was an explosion of new ideas and improvements. Watt beam motors were used commercially in much larger quantities and many continued to operate for 100 years or more.

Watt had patents on key aspects of his engine design, but his rotary engine was similarly restricted by the patent of another simple crank. The beam motor was significantly improved and expanded in the rich tin and copper areas of southwestern England, allowing drainage of the deep mines that existed there. As a result, Cornish beam motors became world famous, as they remain among the most massive beam motors ever built.

Due to the number of patents in various parts of the engines and the consequences of patent infringement, there are examples of Beam Engines without a manufacturer's name in any of the parts (Hollycombe Steam Collection).
