A rocking bridge (sometimes called a drawbridge) is a mobile bridge with a counterbalance that continuously balances a span, or "blade", through its upward swing to provide separation for boat traffic. It can be single or double leaves. The name comes from the French term for balance scale, which uses the same principle. Rocking bridges are the most common type of moving space because they open quickly and require relatively little energy to operate, while providing the possibility of unlimited vertical clearance for maritime traffic. Rocking bridges have been in use since antiquity. However, it was not until the adoption of steam energy in the 1850s that very long, heavy vain could be moved fast enough for practical application.

Rocking bridges have been in use since antiquity. However, it was not until the adoption of steam energy in the 1850s that very long, heavy vain could be moved fast enough for practical application.
Types
There are three types of swing bridge designs and the counterweights necessary to balance the length of a scale can be located above or below the deck of the bridge.
The fixed trunnion (sometimes a Chicago "scale") rotates around a large shaft that raises the blade (s). The name of the Chicago scale derives from the location where it is widely used, and is a refinement by Joseph Strauss of the fixed trunnion.
The rolling lifting stump (sometimes a "Scherzer" rolling elevation) increases the span by rolling on a track that looks like a rocker base. The "Scherzer" roller lift is a refinement patented in 1893 by the American engineer William Donald Scherzer. The rarer Rall type combines the rolling up with the longitudinal movement in the trunnions when opening. It was patented (1901) by Theodor Rall. One of the few surviving examples is the Broadway Bridge (1913), in Portland, Oregon.
