The Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) is the main nuclear research facility in India based in Trombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra. BARC is a multidisciplinary research center with an extensive research and development infrastructure covering the entire spectrum of nuclear science, engineering and related fields.
The central mandate of BARC is to maintain peaceful applications of nuclear energy, mainly for the generation of energy. It manages all facets of nuclear power generation, from theoretical reactor design, computer modeling and simulation, risk analysis, development and testing of new reactor fuel materials, etc. It also conducts research on spent fuel processing and safe disposal of nuclear waste. Its other areas of research focus are applications for isotopes in industries, medicine, agriculture, etc. BARC operates a number of research reactors across the country.
