Emerging new applications in the areas of portable power generation, small turbochargers and spindles require the development of high speed, low power electric drives. An electric drive system of 500,000 r / min, 100 W. is presented. Due to high speed requirements, the standard machine design and electronic topology options are no longer applied and the complete drive system must be considered . A permanent magnet machine is used with a litz wire winding without a groove, resulting in a low inductance of the motor and a high fundamental frequency of the machine. Three different combinations of electronic power topologies and switching strategies have been investigated experimentally. A block-switched voltage source inverter and an additional dc-dc converter is selected as the most optimal option for the power electronics interface, as it results in the smaller volume of the entire drive system due to lower losses A small number of semiconductor devices and a relatively simple control implementation in a low cost digital signal processor.
