Bamboo as a Building Material
#1

Bamboo, a species of plant in the grass family possessing good strength and flexibility can be used as a building material. However, due to the emergence of better building materials, bamboos use is limited to certain applications only. Besides the extensive use of steel and other building materials for the construction in the present trend, bamboo can replace wood and steel in many applications like roof covering, footbridges, reinforcement, scaffolding, bamboo houses, etc which accounts for low cost construction.

Bamboo as a building material
In South America, Africa and, in particular, in South-East- Asia, Bamboo is one of the oldest construction materials.Bamboo can be worked with the simplest tools which must be especially sharp because of the highly silicified outer zone. Tool will wear out easily.

Used methods for working bamboo
Splitting: very easy as long as you work along
the cane axis.It is usually driven apart by a wedge and usually cut or split into eight segments.halved canes, strips and battens are thus derived. To get planks, all the nodes
are smashed and the wall of the pole is split
over its entire length and forced open until the
wall of the pole lies flat. .

Shaping:
Bamboo which grows in a box gets a square shape and is easy to work on.

Bending:
bamboo that is Freshly cut can be bent and will keep
this shape after drying. If heated to 150 degrees, it will keep the shape.

Treatment of the surface
Bleeching and dyeing may change the shape of the bamboo and may not be able to support the weight.
Other methods:
In some countries, the surface will be peeled off, hydrochlorid acid is
put on the bamboo and then they are put in an oven.

Scopes
Bamboo material offers a surprisingly large
number of applications and uses. Roofing, Scaffoldings. Footbridges and bridges can all be made from bamboo. For more details, refer this pdf:

Bamboo as reinforcement in structural concrete elements
The construction industry consumes energy and materials the most in almost all the countries. To increase the amount of information concerning bamboo as a building material, several programmes have been deviised. The vegetable fibres have been used as the as reinforcement in different types of matrices such as soil and cement composites or as standalone construction material. A few results about the use of the microstructure of bamboo as a functionally gradient material has been presented in the article.

One laminated bamboo-frame house per hectare per year
A complete quantitative analysis that demonstrates the global potential of bamboo as a modern construction material is presented in this article. focussing on renewable resources is the main aim of this shift towards using bamboo. Bamboo can replace the concrete, brick and (hard)wood in particular. laminated bamboo-frame building can be a viable alternative to wood frame building. the environmental impact of the built environment can be reduced by using bamboo.

An environmental, economic and practical assessment of bamboo as a building material for supporting structures

Here, bamboo columns were environmentally and financially assessed and compared to building materials more common in Western Europe. failure of building with bamboo was also assessed.
