Badarpur Thermal Power Station is located in the Badarpur area of NCT Delhi. The power plant is one of the coal-based power plants of NTPC. The National Institute of Powder Formation (NPTI) for the North India region under the Ministry of Power, Government of India was established in Badarpur in 1974, within the complex of the Badarpur Thermal Power Plant (BTPS).

The Badarpur Power Plant has an installed capacity of 705 MW. It is located in the southeast corner of Delhi on Mathura Road near Faridabad. It was the first central sector power plant conceived in India in 1965. It was originally designed to provide power to the neighboring states of Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, U.P., Rajasthan and Delhi. But since 1987 Delhi has become its sole beneficiary. It was owned and operated by the Central Electric Authority. Its construction was started in 1968, and the first unit was put into service on July 26, 1973. Coal for the plant is derived from the Jharia coal fields. This was built under the ownership of the Central Electric Authority, later transferred to NTPC.

It supplies power to the city of Delhi. It is one of the oldest plants in operation. Its 100 MW capacity has been reduced to 95 MW. These units have an indirect heating boiler, while the 210 MW units have a direct combustion boiler. All turbines are of Russian design. Both the turbine and the boilers have been supplied by BHEL. The boiler of the Stage-I units is Czech. design. The boilers of units 4 and 5 are designed by combustion engineering (USA). The instrumentation of the units of stage I and unit 4 are of the Russian design. The instrumentation of unit5 is provided by M / S Instrumentation Ltd. Kota, is Kent's design.

In 1978 the management of the plant was transferred to NTPC, CEA. Plant performance increased significantly, and steadily after taking control by NTPC until 2006, but now the plant faces several problems.

Being an old plant, the Badarpur thermal power station (BTPS) has little automation. Their performance deteriorates due to various reasons, such as aging, poor quality and quantity of cooling water, etc. It receives cooling water from the Agra Channel, which is an irrigation channel of the Yamuna River. Due to increasing water pollution, Yamuna's water is highly contaminated. This contaminated water when it enters the condenser, adversely affects the life of the condenser tubes, resulting in frequent tube leakage. This dirty water from the pipe leaks, mixing in the feed water cycle causes numerous problems, such as frequent leaks in the boiler tube and deposition of silica on the blades of the turbine.

Apart from the poor quality, the amount of water supply is also erratic due to the lack of coordination between the NTPC and the UP irrigation that manages the Agra Canal.

The quality of the coal supplied has been considerably degraded. In the worst case, there were many trip trips due to poor quality. The poor quality of the coal also puts loads on the equipment, like mills and its performance also decreases. The coal for the plant is obtained from afar, which makes the total cost of double coal fuel cost in the coal mine. This factor coupled with the low efficiency due to aging and old design makes the plant's electricity more costly.

Currently the address is headed by Mr. N.K. Sinha, Director General.

The energy cost of Badarpur is Rs 4.62 / kWh [3] making it one of the most expensive in India.
