Axial-field electrical machines offer an alternative to the conventional machines. In the axial-field machine, the air gap flux is axial in direction and the active current carrying conductors are radially positioned. This paper presents the design characteristics, special features, manufacturing aspects and potential applications for axial-field electrical machines. The experimental from several prototypes, including d.c. machines, synchronous machines and single-phase machines are given. The special features of the axial-field machine, such as its planar and adjustable air gap, flat shape, ease of diversification, etc., enable axial-fled machines to have distinct advantages over conventional machines in certain applications, especially in special purpose applications. conventional radial field machines. The axial field electrical machines described in this paper are particularly suitable for d.c and synchronous machines where the double air gaps present no difficulties since these machines normally require fairly large air gaps to reduce the effect of armature reaction. One of the major objections to the use of AFMs lies in the difficulty on cutting the slots in their laminated cores..

An axial field electric machine having an improved efficiency includes a number of magnetic elements (e.g., as a rotor) as annular disks magnetized to provide multiple sector-shaped poles. Each sector has a polarity opposite that of an adjacent sector, and each sector is polarized through the thickness of the disk. The poles of each disk are aligned with opposite poles of each adjacent magnet. Metal members adjacent the outermost disks contain the flux. The axial field electric machine also includes one or more conductor elements (e.g., as a stator) which include a number of conductor phases that traverse the flux emanating between poles of axially adjacent magnetic elements. The design of the axial field electric machine including the gap spacing between adjacent magnetic elements, the transition width between adjacent poles on each magnetic element, the number of poles, the number and width or conductor phases in the conductor element is based on the physical characteristics of the magnetic elements to increase efficiency.

Axial field electric machine
The axial field machines have a number of magnetic elements like rotor as annular disks magnetized to provide multiple sector-shaped poles. The polarity opposite that of adjacent sector is provided for each poles and each each disk poles are aligned with opposite poles of each adjacent magnet. the flux is contained by the Metal members that are adjacent to the outermost disks. e the flux emanating between poles of the magnetic elements is traversed through the conductor elements. The the physical characteristics of the magnetic elements determine the following parameters:
-gap spacing between adjacent magnetic elements
-number of poles,
-adjacent pole transition width
-gap spacing etc.

Description

This axial field electric machine maximize efficiency, motor constant, power density and at a reduced cost. the production of torque is maximised for maximising the Efficiency and motor constant. This design eliminates all all ferromagnetic material that incurs core loss. Thus the peak efficiency is increased, as well as range of speeds over which efficiency is high. The Modular construction has the advantages like allowing the motors at varying power levels to be constructed .
