Described here is an embedded system prototype of an RFID-based automatic airport baggage handling system using Lego Mindstorm, ARM processor, FPGA, and motors.The prototype described here shows how to solve several problems, currently encountered in the barcode systems at Taiwanâ„¢s CKS international airport, including manual classification into different cabins and low identification rates.

Introduction:
RFID is a choic for many of the airports for the following reasons:
-better customer satisfaction.
-security
-Anti terrorism is also a major concern
-save money
-reduce the number of lost baggages
-more efficient
RFID is better than barcode in many situations.

RFID is a chip with a radio based transmission capabilities that can store a tag of data.
Design choice:
The system consists of tag readers, tags, edge servers, middlewware and application. Individual bags are provided a tag which contains a transponder with a digital memory chip that has a unique electronic product code.The interrogator, an antenna package with a tranciever and a decoder, emits a signal activating the RFID tag so that it can read and write data to it. When this RFID tag passes through the electromagnetic zone, it activates the reader, decodes the data in the tag's IC and passes it to a computer. Robotic arms control which direction the baggages moves along the conveyor belt.
Technology choice:
Determination of location is an important aspect in baggage handling systems. RFID can identify tags concurrently.

software choice:
RFID tag readers are connected to the mechanical arms which must accurately divert the baggage to the correct location based on its identifying the RFID. This is implemented with a creator board and connected via the RS232 port. The ARM processor is used. The tag data is continuously read by the software in the ARM and motors in the mechanical arm is actuated via a FPGA chip.

Function choices:
The data stored in the RFID tag must be finalized keeping in mind the limited memory and processing capability of the RFID tag. The preferred data fields can be:
-passport number
-flight number
-baggage serial number
-flight starting point, flight terminal
-unloading passageway,
-class of the passenger etc.
