Abstract
The major work on the theory and application of artificial
intelligence (AI), which includes expert systems, is going on in the
United States, Europe and Japan.
The major topics discussed in this paper are:
-AI and its application in power engineering;
- problems in AI applications development and their solutions
-practical system examples
-AI applications to the power systems of the future.
Research in AI has developed many techniques and methodologies that can be adapted or used directly to solve complex power system problems. The problems in AI are introduced and their applications in the power systems field investigated.

Application of AI in the Japanese Power Industry
The need for AI has been developed as a result of many reasons:
New engineers and plant operators,
employed in large numbers for the post-World War I1 reconstruction
of Japan, are now retiring. engineersloperators are not getting enough exposure to faults and
other related system problems as the systems are becoming more and more reliable.
Problems and Promises of A I Tools
Shortcomings and the unexpected outputs:
The effectiveness and feasibility of the AI tools have not have not been sufficiently examined. because the operation of the expert
system cannot be suspended while it is in maintenance, the use of Dual CPU is vary significant.
