DEFINITION
• Art Nouveau, in architectural context, is regarded by some as the first truly modern form of modern architectural art.
It was characterized by curving lines and asymmetrical organization, often with writhing plants constituting a principle design motif. The movement got its name from the Maison de l'Art Nouveau, an interior decoration gallery in Paris, France.
• Organic shape by Gehry
INTRODUCTION
• This movement continued in furniture, glassware, graphic design, jewellery, pottery, metalwork, textiles and sculpture apart from architecture because it intended a new approach of ‘NEW’ in everyday life.
• In architecture, hyperbolas and parabolas in windows, arches, and doors are common, and decorative moldings 'grow' into plant-derived forms. Like most design styles, Art Nouveau sought to harmonize its forms. The text above the Paris Metro entrance follows the qualities of the rest of the iron work in the structure
• Though Art Nouveau designers selected and 'modernized' some of the more abstract elements of Rococo style, such as flame and shell textures, they also advocated the use of highly stylized organic forms as a source of inspiration, expanding the 'natural' repertoire to embrace seaweed, grasses, and insects.
• It was seen, that like other styles of different period, it had no proper rules defining it but if differed from country to country.
It may be possible that two different countries have different characters used in them.
FEATURES DEFINING IT
