A three-phase single-phase conversion is required to operate the auxiliary machines of the Indian Railway AC locomotives. Both the ARNO converter and the static converters are used on the Indian railroad to convert the single-phase alternating power supply into alternating three-phase supply. This article briefly describes the ARNO converter and the static converter and its relative merits and demerits and then compares the performance of the ARNO converter and the supplied static converter in 25KV, Indian Railway 50 Hz AC locomotive. Annual savings and life cycle Energy saving by providing static converters is also estimated to prefer the use of static converters in AC locomotives than the ARNO converter.
