Very good morning to all of you and greetings for the new year 2009. Today’s chief guests
Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka Dr. B.S. Yeddyurappa and Padamsri Prof. P. Balaram, Our
Director; Today’s president of the function Honorable Dr. C.N. Ashwathanarayan, MLA,
Malleswarm Bangalore; Guests of Honor: Sri. R. Ashoka, Honorable minister for Transport, &
Bangalore Urban (South) Dist. Minister, GoK; Chairman, KSRTC & BMTC and Sri B.K.
SubbuRaman, registrar of IISc, my colleague Prof. PP. Mujumdar, Chairman of Department of Civil
Engineering, Other dignitaries, Guests and Invitees, press and TV persons, my dear colleagues and
students, Ladies and Gentlemen.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome the dignitaries on the dias and off the dias to this Inaugural
function of “Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP)”
at Indian Institute of Science with an initiative of the Government of Karnataka. This function is a
joint function of the Government of Karnataka and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It is
a great occasion for Govt of Karnataka and IISc to come together to start a new interdisciplinary
center for Infrastructure, sustainable transportation and urban planning at the department of Civil
Engineering, in IISc.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our hearty welcome, on my behalf and on our
Institute’s behalf, to Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka Dr. B.S. Yeddyurappa, for honoring
our invitation to be the chief guest of this function and inaugurate the CiSTUP. Honorable CM. is
very supportive for higher education in the state and has taken lead in supporting academic
institutions of higher learning. We extend a warm welcome and present a bouquet of flowers to Dr.
B.S. Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister, Govt of Karnataka.
We also welcome our beloved director Prof. P. Balaram, who is always supportive for such research
and developmental initiatives in the institute and for accepting to grace this function and deliver his
address. We present a bouquet of flowers to welcome Prof. Balaram.
Hearty welcome to Sri. R. Ashoka, Honorable minister for Transport & Bangalore Urban (South)
Dist. Minister,GoK; Chairman, KSRTC & BMTC for accepting our invitation at this short notice to
be with us today as a guest of honor. He has taken lead in establishing this center at IISc and to
generate the corpus required from various stake holders. We welcome him and present a bouquet of
flowers to Honorable minister Sri. R.Ashok.

Hearty welcome to Honorable Dr. C.N. Ashwathanarayana, MLA, Malleswarm Bangalore for
accepting our invitation at short notice to preside over the function. We extend hearty welcome and
present a bouquet of flowers to Dr. C.N. Ashwathanarayan.
Today we do not have Shri. Ananthakumar, Honorable MP of Bangalore south & Vice Chaiman,
Bangalore Development Task Force and our Institute council member, with us at this function due
to some other urgent meeting in Delhi. Also, Sri. Upendra Tripathy, Principal Secretary Transport
and home, GOK is unable to be here with us today due to some unavoidable personal reasons.
Also, Sri. Sudhakar Rao, Chief Secretary, Govt of Karnataka is also unable to be here due to other
engagements.
Hearty welcome to Sri. Thangaraju, Principal Secretary (revenue),Government of Karnataka and we
are very happy to have him with us as guest of honor on this occasion. We present a bouquet of

welcome press, TV persons, and officers of our institute, my colleagues from the department,
students and other invitees.
