A wedding anniversary is the anniversary of the date the marriage took place. Traditional names exist for all of them: for example, 50 years of marriage is called a "golden wedding anniversary" or simply a "golden anniversary".

The historical origins of wedding anniversaries go back to the Holy Roman Empire, where the spouses crowned their wives with a silver crown on their twenty-fifth anniversary, and a gold crown in the fiftieth. Later, mainly in the twentieth century, mercantilism led to the addition of more anniversaries represented by a named gift.
