The marathon is a long distance race with an official distance of 42,195 kilometers (26,219 miles, or 26 miles 385 yards), usually run as a road race. Origin

The name Marathon comes from the legend of Philippi or Pheidippides, the Greek messenger. There is a debate about the historical accuracy of this legend. The Greek historian Herodotus, the chief source of the Greco-Persian wars, mentions Philippi as the messenger who ran from Athens to Sparta for help, and then ran back, at a distance of more than 240 kilometers (150 miles) each address. In some manuscripts of Herodotus, the name of the corridor between Athens and Sparta is given as Philippi. Herodotus makes no mention of a messenger sent from Marathon to Athens, and relates that the main part of the Athenian army, having fought and won the strenuous battle, and fearing a naval incursion by the Persian fleet against a helpless Athens, marched rapidly back from The battle to Athens, arriving the same day.

This last and most obvious route coincides almost exactly with the modern Marathon-Athens road, which follows the land lie southward from Marathon Bay and along the coast, then takes a gentle but prolonged ascent westward toward East of Athens, between the foothills of Montes Hymettus and Penteli, and then gently downhill to Athens proper. This route, as it existed when the Olympics were revived in 1896, was approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) long, and this was the approximate distance originally used for marathon races. However, there have been suggestions that Philippi might have followed another route: a westward ascent along the eastern and northern slopes of Mount Penteli to the Dionysus Pass, and then a straight line descends southward toward Athens. This route is considerably shorter, about 35 kilometers (22 miles), but includes a very steep initial rise of more than 5 kilometers (3.1 mi).
