Good afternoon!

It is a pleasure to welcome all of you to the opening of the International Conference on Technology in Education.

This is the first of a new series of annual academic conferences that explore how technology can be effectively used in teaching, learning and educational management. For many years, the Hong Kong Open University has co-organized conferences in a similar area with the Hong Kong University School of Continuing Vocational Training and the Caritas Higher Education Institute. I am pleased to see that three institutions have organized a new series of annual conferences that build upon our strengths and have built on our common commitment to promoting the effective use of technology in various modes of education.

The Conference adopts a timely theme, Transforming Educational Practices with Technology. Technology has penetrated virtually every area of educational operations, and is intertwined with educational practices. To benefit effectively from technological applications, it is essential that education professionals prepare to transform their practices and continue to identify effective ways of transforming their contexts.

If you look at the Conference Program, you will agree that this inaugural Conference will be busy and productive. There is so much to offer for a three day event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Organizing Committee of the Conference for its diligent work. I also want to thank the participants, especially those coming from abroad, to join us and share their valuable experiences and ideas. It is essential to bring together experts in the field of technology in education so that we can realize the potential of technology for education together.

This year, the Hong Kong Open University celebrates its Jubilee Anniversary. Over the past 25 years, we have evolved from being just a distance education provider to adults in Hong Kong to becoming a multi-way education provider through the use of technology in various ways. This Conference is undoubtedly a wonderful addition to our calendar of activities for the celebration of the Jubilee.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy the Conference, and I wish our visitors from abroad have a very pleasant stay in our city.
