An impromptu speech is an impromptu speech that the candidate is compelled to make on a given topic then and there. In some cases, the panel provides the candidate about a minute to organize their thoughts before speaking. In other cases, it is expected to start talking as soon as the topic is given. Historically, the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) (a first-class business school affiliated with the University of Delhi) has been known to hold an impromptu session along with the GD / PI rounds in its selection process.

Extempore test the candidates in the following: -

• Ability to think in the feet

• Analysis of the theme and identification of the topic to be treated

• Generating ideas

• Prioritization and sequencing of logical thinking

• Ability to connect to panel

• Communication skills

• General presentation skills: body language, confidence, balance, composure, etc.

To talk in an extemporaneous way - candidates must be fluent and well read.

Some advices:

• Mental preparation: knowing what to talk before giving the speech. Ponder on the topic for some time and prepare the flow of delivery. Your previous sessions of improvised practice would surely help here. Understanding the audience, the direction they are most likely to accept, helps to frame the flow of speech.

• Start talking at a steady pace: Do not start very fast, as you are likely to end well before the given time.

• Trust: Trust, along with knowledge, always helps, even in abstract subjects where the presence of mind, spontaneity and analytical skills are tested.

• Handle mental blocks with intelligence: Sometimes, when left blank, try to maneuver yourself out of the situation gracefully by avoiding being nervous. For such situations it is better to have backup plans.

• Speech control: Do not get excited about the subject, avoid being too personal on sensitive issues, do not stray from the topic and talk about irrelevant things.

• Presenting both parties - For controversial issues (eg Republic Day celebrations should be redefined?), You can choose to explore both sides, a position that becomes difficult to take in case of GD due to challenges of the group dynamic. In an impromptu, since you are the only person speaking, it becomes possible for an intelligent and strategic speaker to discuss both aspects of the controversial subject. However, care must be taken with time constraints while taking this position.

• Competence, Enthusiasm and Adaptability is the key: Work on your competitive advantage, which can be excellent vocabulary, good general knowledge, etc. How well and quickly does a candidate adapt to the situation that is set and with what level of enthusiasm and energy does he deliver the speech are some of the other desirable evaluation parameters.
