Dumb Charades

There are days when happiness and dissatisfaction occupy it at the same time. Those days give you a strange feeling of restlessness. Today was one of those days. Working in the office usually keeps me busy. However, I make a point to become a part of any fun event my company has to offer. So today, when we had the celebration of women's day, I was there on time. My teammates have an interesting coolness quotient - they find it cool to boycott anything that does not fit their regular idea of a day at work. So, I went alone. Everyone else had come in gangs. I felt uncomfortable about being at a fun event alone. But I did not regret it, nor was it the first time.

There was only one girl in the crowd I knew, Richa. In fact, I had come to know of her when I anchored for talent advice two months ago. (You will say that almost anyone I can find at fun events in my office is only known to me through another fun event). The first event was the musical chair. I faced 3 rounds. But, unfortunately, she was in the back of one of the smartest girls in the group: Richa. When he came to her against me, I came out in the fourth round. My musical chair continued for a while, as the audience chairs had been taken for the game.

Then there was time for silent charades. Dumb charades is a game that really excites me. I was jealous and asked "what kind of charades mute?". Organizers said "Hindi movies". Is not that enough to extinguish me? By then, Richa invited me to his team. (I was a bit surprised because we did not really know each other very much, but when it comes to nonsense that many girls surprisingly do not own, I usually remember ... and I suppose the anchor would have given that notion). But I told them I could not guess or act Hindi movies. (Hey you, I can understand and even speak Hindi that can make a Hindi native hang, but Hindi movies, no, not really).
Some arguments from myself and a couple of others persuaded the organizers to allow English and Kannada as well (not that I know many English films, but with years of childhood practice, at least I can enact them). But now, I did not have a computer. I finally found a couple more girls who wanted to play, a Hindi and a Kannada. My persuasion worked and they settled for English. I am usually popular on the side of acting mute charades and so I chose that and excitedly showed my newly discovered team a number of symbols. Finally we got to play. The first round was easier - "face to face" was the movie and we got it in 6 seconds (of course, we were the fastest). The second round was a hangover. I showed "hang". I managed to show "empty", but could not guess "more". I finally showed them "6 balls in Cricket" and 6 balls make an "over". We got it in 51 seconds. In the third round, we were supposed to find the movie and sing a song of it. I vetoed it by saying that we can not sing English movie songs. The idea of the song was abandoned. Next time, they tried to make it harder "Me, Me and Irene". I even got the fourth word with a combination of "eye" and "ring". At that moment, the organizer shook my hand and said that my performance was great. The participants asked us to come to the center of the stage so that everyone could see us. (That's some shameless boasting, but you have to admit that sometimes I can handle good work too!)

They gave him "Sherlock Holmes" and I acted with "Home" and "Lock" and my wise team cracked it. Next, they wanted it to be so difficult that they asked for suggestions from the audience. One girl suggested "Love in the Time of Cholera". Now imagine doing this in two minutes, an unknown film with 6 words and how you ever act the anger! My team was able to find "love and the moment of the call of the fever" (I tried to explain to them that it is a fever that starts with "chol" and ended up like this.) In fact, we got this despite losing some time asking for a notebook to write down the words they found - the name was too long for them to remember!). We could not make the last word, but this round was only for the three finalists and the three teams had not found their answers. So we survived.

Then came the spoil. In the shape of cake and samosa. We all had them and my teammate exaggerated with two samosas. He returned quite late and, at that moment, had protested to the organizers not to give such long names.
Two other participants had broken the final round in 23 and 24 seconds. They gave me "fifty first dates" for the final round. Would not that be a ride? Infact of all the films that promulgate, this is the only film that I had seen and one of my favorites of all time).

I tried to show "fifty" with five in one hand and in my other hand, I joined my thumb and forefinger to show "0". The audience had found the answer by then. My team arrived with a brilliant "O-5". I gave up and tried the second word. This should be easy. I had given the specific example to my teammate before that if I show "1", I guess "first", etc. I showed him "1" finger, my team mates came up with "one", "self", etc. say something like "1" and my teammate came up with "2". (How brilliant, if I wanted to show "2", I would not have simply shown two fingers !!). The two samosas were doing the conversation now. I tried to indicate that I was "first" in a race. They came with "running", etc. I switched to the third word "dates". I had told you before that if I show you the watch, try to guess date, time, etc. It did not work, and I could not successfully display a calendar as well. They guessed "someone from five points" and finally gave up. The stars of the show 'surrendered', because the cakes and samosas had surpassed them!

The organizers felt so "sorry" for us that they managed to make a third prize on the spot with chocolates. The winners and runners-up took home some sets of dishes. (By the way, the winners had broken the first rounds almost to the brink of dead time). It was difficult for me not to scold my teammate who later said that his favorite movie was "50 first dates". But you can not really scold a stranger, can you! But her own friends saved me the trouble by nagging her herself. I was glad when we got so close and very sad when we lost in such a silly way. But if I think about it more, I did not have teammates in the first place. What if I never found them, even if I did, what would have happened if they could not guess, say "face" or "hangover." That's how the upbeat side of me comforted the "It's an unfair world" side of me!
