"Chairman Hight and members of the Board of Trustees, President Arnold, Provost Anderson, distinguished panelists, excellencies, colleagues, friends and students:

On behalf of our students and faculty, it is a great honor and personal pleasure to welcome you here on the occasion of the launch of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Thank you for joining us this afternoon. Your presence here is not only in joyous celebration of the occasion, but it is an expression of your interest in global affairs and public policy. And this, places on us a solemn responsibility that we are determined to honor faithfully.

In the last few minutes you have watched a short film about the creation of this new school describing basically what we are. Consequently, I want to use a minute or two to talk about whom we are and what we want to be.

In my lifetime alone the world has expanded into different hemispheres, with landings on the Moon and Mars, yet it has become much smaller through technological advancements in transportation and communications making distances less significant and almost virtual.

For all practical purposes we have eradicated some endemic diseases and dilapidating scourges such as polio, saving and bettering many lives. However, at the same time we have created and used weapons of mass destruction that indiscriminately kill and maimed human beings.

We have extended the average life time of human beings by over a decade and made the calculation of time almost infinitesimal where nano-seconds are considered to be slow for the phanto-second advocates, with all due respect to one of our illustrious trustees. However, we remain bizarrely, and immorally, unable to provide basic food and education to over a billion people around the globe today living in squalor below the poverty line.

We have been able to map out the human genome but continue destroying our environment at an ever increasing and dangerous pace.

We have appropriately promoted civil liberties and human rights but allowed for foreign occupation to languish and international law to be flaunted brazenly.

As such, we live in a world of vast opportunities, stark contradictions and grave challenges. In this light, passivism and apathy are not options or choices that we can afford or condone. Nor can the world community respond appropriately if it does not empower itself with inclusive multidisciplinary thinking, tolerance for others and a global outlook to the policy issues it faces. This is true irrespective of what discipline or interest is your choice or focus. It is time here and now for the international community to embrace the policies that will allow our collective genius to substitute and contain the avaricious greed that has often put us on the road towards self-destruction.

Ladies and gentlemen, these are our beliefs and it is from this perspective that the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy will address the policy issues related to the rule of law, sustainable development, communication and media, health, environment and climate change, gender, refugees, Middle East studies, American studies, international and urban governance, international security and nuclear proliferation, and many others we will be dealing with in the months and years to come.

As some of you may already know, in less than three months we have already changed our name to better emphasize our global outlook and activist policy orientation. Academically, we have presented proposals to refine some of our programs and prepared several new degree proposals and there will be more. We have already received our first generous grant to finance study at GAPP for Egyptian university graduates. And,we have signed several cooperation agreements with International Universities such as the Lee Kuan Yu School of Public Policy, with several more in the pipeline. All of these efforts are meant to provide our graduates and trainees the best possible education in their particular disciplines with a special emphasis on multidisciplinary education and skills necessary to effect policy.

For the policymakers, before the end of this semester we will have offered our first new executive training program in cooperation with the Kennedy and Dubai School of Governments, where there will be a focus on analytical skills and hands on practical applications.

And, in order to contribute to the public debate of policy issues we have already hosted an International Nuclear Nonproliferation event, we will also shortly commence our regular open and public seminar series before summer and will publish the school quarterly by the end of the year.

I cannot tell you in how many ways we will grow in the years to come but grow we will. Nor can i tell you what ranking we will have three years from now, but mark my words we will do better. I cannot even promise you we will not stumble or make mistakes, but doubt not that we will be active, prodigious and innovative be that in upgrading our academic offerings, exchanges of students and faculty, undertaking valuable research and constructively engaging and serving our communities especially as they develop public policies. And ladies and gentlemen, rest assured we at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy are determined to make a difference. This is a commitment we make to you, to our students, to our respective disciplines, to our societies and to the world at large.

In closing ladies and gentlemen, once again I thank you all for being here, and a special word of thanks to our distinguished panelists all of whom have taken valuable time out of their very intensive schedules to help us launch this school in a highly significant and insightful fashion."
