ABSTRACT
This work presents the design of an expert system that aims to provide the patient with background forsuitable diagnosis of some of the eye diseases. The eye has always been viewed as a tunnel to the innerworkings of the body. There are many disease states that may produce symptoms from the eye. CLIPSlanguage is used as a tool for designing our expert system. An initial evaluation of the expert system wascarried out and a positive feedback was received from the users

.1. INTRODUCTION
Computer-based methods are increasingly used toimprove the quality of medical services. ArtificialIntelligence (AI) is the area of computer sciencefocusing on creating machines that can engage onbehaviors that humans consider intelligent. Theability to create intelligent machines has intriguedhumans since ancient times and today with theadvent of the computer and 50 years of researchinto AI programming techniques, the dream ofsmart machines is becoming a reality. Researchersare creating systems which can mimic humanthought, understand speech, beat the best humanchess player, and countless other feats neverbefore possible. Find out how the military isapplying AI logic to its hi-tech systems, and howin the near future Artificial Intelligence mayimpact our lives [1].Dependence on the human expert can beminimized if his/her expertise can be transferredinto a computer system. The proposed system fordealing with the problem of eye disease diagnosisis an expert system. An expert system is a systemthat employs human knowledge captured in acomputer to solve problems that ordinarily requirehuman expertise [2],[13]. Expert system seeks andutilizes relevant information from their humanusers and from available knowledge bases in orderto make recommendations [3].With the expert system, the user can interact with acomputer to solve a certain problem. This canoccur because the expert system can store heuristicknowledge.The development of expert system is implementedin CLIPS programming environment (C LanguageIntegrated Production System) [4],[14]. Thisprogramming tool is designed to facilitate thedevelopment of software to model humanknowledge or expertise for medical therapy.CLIPS program is used by reason of the flexibility,the expandability and the low cost.The human eye is the organ which gives us thesense of sight, allowing us to learn more about thesurrounding world than we do with any of theother four senses. We use our eyes in almostevery activity we perform, whether reading,working, watching television, writing a letter,driving a car, and in countless other ways. Mostpeople probably would agree that sight is the sensethey value more than all the rest.The eye allows us to see and interpret the shapes,colors, and dimensions of objects in the world byprocessing the light they reflect or emit. The eyeis able to detect bright light or dim light, but itcannot sense objects when light are absent
