An Adaptive Image Steganography Based on Depth-varying Embedding
#1

Abstract
Steganographic technique is a means of covert communi-
cation. In this paper, an adaptive image steganographywith
high capacity and good security is proposed. Based on lo-
cal complexity of a cover image, varying-depth embedding
is used to improve the imperceptibility and decrease dis-
tortions in it. Experimental results show that the stegano-
graphic technique may provide higher capacity and be re-
sistant to several well-known steganalytic methods.
1 Introduction
Classic methods of securing communicationmainly base
on cryptography, which encrypts plain text to generate cipher
text. However, the transmission of cipher text may
easily arouse attackers’ suspicion, and the cipher text may
thus be intercepted, attacked or decrypted violently. In order
to make up for the shortcomings of cryptographic techniques,
steganography has been developed as a new covert
communication means in recent years. It transfers message
secretly by embedding it into a cover medium with the use
of information hiding techniques.
LSB-based steganography is one of the conventional
techniques capable of hiding large secret message in a cover
image without introducing many perceptible distortions. It
works by replacing the LSBs of randomly selected pixels
in the cover image with the secret message bits. Many
steganographic tools using LSB-based steganographic techniques,
including Steghide, S-tools, Steganos, SteganoDos
andWinstorms, are available on the Internet1.
Much research on steganalyzing LSB steganography has
been done in the past years. The typical steganalytic methods,
including 2 detection[8], generalized 2 detection[5],

RS method[4], state transition diagram[1] and sample pair
analysis[2], may attack LSB-based steganographic techniques
successfully to a different degree. Later, many
novel steganographic techniques with better security have
been proposed, such as Hide[6], stochastic modulation
steganography[3]. But till now, Hide may be successfully
detected by a steganalytic method presented in [7]. For
stochastic modulation steganography, in order to achieve
higher hiding capacity, the variance of stego-noise needs
to be increased sharply, which may result in great degradation
in the cover image. In this paper, a depth-varying
adaptive image steganography is proposed. It may achieve
higher capacity while being resistant to several steganalytic
algorithms effectively.
This paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, the
models of stego-noise in several steganographic techniques
are briefly analyzed. In Section 3, the design of our novel
steganography is presented in detail. Then the experimental
results are provided in Section 4. In the final section, the
conclusions of this paper are given.
